Onlookers all fired up
By Jeff Ang
THE covered overhead bridge at Toa Payoh Lorong 1 offered more than a good vantage point for the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) torch relay.
It was shelter from the morning drizzle. And, more importantly, it was a bridge to making new bonds.
Just ask residents Jenny Ang, Tan Kin Mong and Wang Yan Yan. They had never met, despite living within five blocks from one another for the last eight years, until they gathered on the bridge yesterday.
Mr Tan, 63, a retired shipyard worker, said: 'I hardly know my neighbours at all.
But an event like the YOG can really bring people together.'
Ms Wang, a study mama from China, was also glad that the YOG has brought her new friends. But what will live on in her memory is
the rush of pride she felt when she watched on television as the flame arrived in Singapore last Thursday.
'I've long considered Singapore my home, and I was so proud to see Ng Ser Miang bringing the flame back here,' said Ms Wang, who is in her 40s. Mr Ng is chairman of the Singapore YOG Organising Committee.
Ms Ang, a retiree, said rain or shine,
she would not have missed yesterday's event. The 72-year-old added she may never get another chance to be so close to the flame.
At Marymount Road, nine-year-old Gayatri Kamble, who was with her mother Sangita, 36, and brother Tejas, eight, could barely contain her excitement at the impending arrival of the flame. Said Ms Sangita: 'We've never seen the Olympic flame in person before, that's why I brought my kids.'
Mr Jonathon Quek, a 40-year-old manager, travelled from Bukit Batok to MacRitchie Reservoir to see the Olympic flame and seek inspiration for his child.
He and his wife, teacher Tham Meng Chee, believe sports can help their daughter Kimberly build her confidence and lead a fuller life.
The 10-year-old, a swimmer at St Margaret's Primary School, is deaf. After the relay, she said: 'Someday, I want to swim for Singapore.'
