Even the best scientists on earth would not be able to forecast the date of a volcanic eruption or any tidal phenomena let alone the exact time of its occurence.
Just another entertaining read.

Scientist base their forecast on know facts, some astrologers base their predictions on their own ESP

15-foot waves hit Mumbai
Published: July 24, 2009 at 7:49 PM

MUMBAI, July 24 (UPI) -- Waves more than 15 feet high crashed into Mumbai beaches and sea walls Friday, the largest waves India's financial center has seen in a century, officials said.

The high seas were caused by a combination of the monsoon and high tides two days after the new moon, the Indo-Asian News Service reported.

About 200 people living on the waterfront were evacuated in advance of the waves and city officials issued warnings. No deaths or injuries were reported.

Office workers took breaks to watch the seas lash the waterfront in the afternoon and balconies were crowded on high-rise apartment buildings facing the sea. The waves were large enough to flood some streets on the waterfront, including the famous Marine Drive.

High seas were also reported along the coast near Mumbai.

More large waves were expected at high tide Saturday.

Waves hit S Gujarat
Saturday, July 25, 2009 9:26 IST

Ahmedabad/Surat: Even as people were evacuated to safer places in Saurashtra due to incessant rains that hit the region, Surat witnessed high tidal waves hitting the Dumas coast yesterday.

"The situation is bad in Porbandar due to continuous rainfall. We have pressed into service NDRF units,'' state relief commissioner P Paneervel said.He said ministers Vajubhai Vala and Anandiben Patel and officers of the revenue department will conduct an aerial survey of the affected districts. "We will then decide about further relief and rescue operations," Paneervel said.

The rescue teams which are already spread out in the entire coastal belt of Dwarka, Porbander, Veraval, Mangrol and Chorwad have been alerted as the tidal waves may bring more water into the already inundated areas.

Meanwhile, the water level in the Sardar Sarovar dam rose to 118 metre till Thursday night, following heavy rains in catchment areaa.

In Surat, local residents witnessed giants waves in Dumas beach on Friday afternoon. The high tide also resulted in many areas of the village being flooded with sea water. The very existence of Dumas and other coastal villages is at threat on account of constant erosion and advancing of the sea. The sea water also flooded Mora and other coastal villages in Hazira belt due to the high tide.

Giant waves, some as high as 30 - 35 feet, hit the Tithal beach in Valsad on account of high tide. A large number of tourists and visitors experienced the scaring spectacle.

The Onjal and Maachhiwad villages in Navsari's Jalalpore taluka were flooded by sea water following high tides. Many other coastal villages such as Dholai, Danti, Ubhrat, Vansi and Borsi Maachhiwad were also hit by the waves.

"Hazira Outer as well as Hazira Inner areas will witness highest tide in month of July. Hazira Outer is expected to witness 8.18 metre high tides while Hazira Inner is expected to witness 6.19 metres high tide," said Surat collector Dilip Rawal said.

Meanwhile, the civic administration in Surat heaved a sign of relief after water of Kankara Khadi went below the danger level. About 588 residents of Azad Nagar in Rasulabad, who had to be evacuated, were shifted back to their homes.

"Kankara Khadi is flowing one metre below danger level of 5.10 metre and as there were no heavy rains throughout the day, we shifted all residents back to their homes," JM Azad, executive engineer of Athwa zone, said.

The inflow at Ukai dam is 1.10 lakh cusecs and water level in the dam is 304 feet. Flood control sources said that water level will reach 305 feet in next few hours.

High tides lash the coast near the Gateway of India in Mumbai on Thursday.

NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- India's financial capital of Mumbai was put on a high-tide alert with officials expecting a water rise of up to 197 inches (5 meters).

Sea tides are expected to rise 5 meters Friday, 4.9 meters Saturday and 4.7 meters Sunday, according to a bulletin by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai.

"We have installed water pumps along the coast and advise the people to avoid beaches," said Jagtab, an official at the disaster management control room.

Floodgates may also be closed in case the threat mounts, he added.

High tides are also forecast from August 19 to 23.

At least 467 people have died in floods in India from this season's monsoon rains, federal authorities said in their latest report.

Flooding has affected about 1.7 million people in parts of India, according to the disaster management division of the federal home ministry.

The country's main weather office has warned of heavy rains in western and central parts of India.

South shore waves keep lifeguards busy
By Star-Bulletin staff
POSTED: 03:09 p.m. HST, Jul 23, 2009

Lifeguards were busier that usual today with a South Shore swell that brought 8-foot waves.

At Waikiki Beach, lifeguards made eight rescues, 38 assists, and prevented 175 people from entering the surf, said Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic. At Ala Moana Beach Park, lifeguards deterred 100 people from going into water and assisted five.

The National Weather Service said a high surf advisory will remain in effect until noon tomorrow. Surf heights of 5 to 8 feet are expected through tomorrow morning, then dropping to 4 to 6 feet.

A high surf advisory means beach goers should stay out of the water and away from the shore break because of hazardous wave action and the potential for strong rip currents, the weather service said.

Body surfer dies after rescue from high surf at the Wedge [Updated]
2:37 PM | July 24, 2009

6a00d8341c630a53ef0115713d0b7b970c-800wi

[Updated 8:14 p.m.: The Orange County coroner’s office has identified the man as 50-year-old Monte Kevin Valantin of Lawndale.]

A body surfer has died after being thrown against the rocks at the Wedge in Newport Beach in 20-foot waves.

The body surfer, whose name was not released, was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital about noon in grave condition, said Jennifer Schulz, a spokeswoman for the Newport Beach Fire Department.

The Wedge is a popular body boarding, surfing and body surfing beach at the south end of the Balboa Peninsula.

A high-surf warning has been in effect for Southern California with waves possibly reaching as high as 8 feet in south-facing beaches. Area lifeguards are warning beachgoers to exercise caution this weekend.

"The high surf is our No. 1 concern," said county lifeguard Capt. Terry Harvey. "We're advising all beachgoers to talk to lifeguards to find out where that safe place is to swim."

Harvey said the result of large surf and an uneven bottom in the water will lead to dangerous rip currents, and conditions are expected to run through the weekend and into next week.

Rescuers have already dealt with a magnitude of distressed swimmers and surfers in the water today, Harvey said.

He said there would be additional Baywatch patrol on beaches to ensure safety.

"We do everything we can," Harvey said. "We are prepared for a busy weekend."

The Wedge is considered a mecca for body surfing, but is also known for its potential dangers.

Wedge veterans have left the beach with concussions, fractured vertebrae and broken bones. The waves ricochet off the rocky jetty at the tip of Balboa Peninsula, smashing together in white-frosted peaks that can tower 20 feet.

The Wedge can chew up novices, flinging them onto the hard berm of sand or sucking them back into the churning surf.

Many Dutch prepare for 2012 apocalypse
Published: June 23, 2008 at 7:25 PM

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, June 23 (UPI) -- Thousands of people in the Netherlands say they expect the world to end in 2012, and many say they are taking precautions to prepare for the apocalypse.

The Dutch-language de Volkskrant newspaper said it spoke to thousands of believers in the impending end of civilization, and while theories on the supposed catastrophe varied, most tied the 2012 date to the end of the Mayan calendar, Radio Netherlands reported Monday.

De Volkskrant said many of those interviewed are stocking up on emergency supplies, including life rafts and other equipment.

Some who spoke to the newspaper were optimistic about the end of civilization.

"You know, maybe it's really not that bad that the Netherlands will be destroyed," Petra Faile said. "I don't like it here anymore. Take immigration, for example. They keep letting people in. And then we have to build more houses, which makes the Netherlands even heavier. The country will sink even lower, which will make the flooding worse."
