Another one group/commuter will vote PAP out.

Goh Meng Seng did an excellent analysis of why our SMRT is so cramped and uncomfortable. You can find the posting in his blog here (http://singaporealternatives.blogspot.com/2010/01/inadequate-public-transportation.html).

A summary of the analysis is that as a result of the FT policy, the Singapore population increased by 17.6% from 2003 to 2008.

The PRs and middle income FTs admitted under the FT policy need to go to work. As a result of the huge increase in population, there was a corresponding huge increase in usage of our transportation network. SMRT ridership increased by 19.0% from 2003 to 2008.

Unfortunately SMRT chose not to upgrade their signaling equipment or buy new trains. Instead they reduced the train frequency so that the number of train kilometers dropped by 12.9% from 2003 to 2008. This caused the average number of passengers per train to rise by 30.4% during the same period. You are therefore NOT IMAGINING THINGS if you find your morning SMRT ride more cramped and uncomfortable as compared to before.

The reason why SMRT reduced the train frequency was so that they could EARN MORE MONEY by packing more people into their trains. From 2003 to 2008, the profit of SMRT increased from S$72.1 million to S$ 149.9 million.

After Goh Meng Seng published his analysis, he came under heavy attack from the PAP internet brigade. Most of the action took place in Lucky’s blog after Lucky published a posting agreeing with Goh Meng Seng. You can find the discussion here (http://singaporemind.blogspot.com/2010/01/more-on-transport.html#links).

If you read the discussion, you will find that the PAP brigade was basically unable to refute Goh Meng Seng’s figures. MM Lee himself eventually conceded the point by making the following remark to the Straits Times:

“We’ve grown in the last five years by just importing labour. Now, the people feel uncomfortable, there are too many foreigners. Trains are overcrowded with foreigners, buses too, property prices have gone up because foreigners with permanent residence are buying into the market. ”- MM Lee 28 Jan 2010 Straits Times

After MM Lee has spoken, we now have SMRT squeaking that they will be buying new trains and installing new signaling equipment. Is this a coincidence? Why didn’t they do it before in line with the increase in SMRT ridership? Also can we expect another huge SMRT fare increase so that SMRT continue to maintain their abnormal profits?

Why does the thread page widens out beyond the screen even though the images are not bigger than the screen size. Does it have anything to do with the arrangement of the HTML img tags?
