Ascent of the dragon prince - 2nd generation

SIngapore's political system is a failure. The use of party whip precludes any proper dialogue before policies are set. With a one-party high majority scenario, as it is, it is true that policies are pushed out without the input of politicians who were elected by the people to do the bidding of the people.

This hongyi guy presupposes that leadership means one man or a very small group of men led one one very powerful man can have all the solutions to all the problems. Silly boy.

A good leader is one who knows how to take the best from each and everyone around him. A false leader is one who only wants yes men around him.

God help you Singaporeans as the dynasty looks like it has been set to continue. The only question is who is going to warm the seat this time around?

Dear Hong Yi

Your very first letter to the press and Singapore as a whole does seem odd topic wise. A more relevant and pertinent topic is the conduct of your family in particular the role of your parents in matters relating to Temasek, a sovereign fund of this country which first took shape as Sheng Li Holdings and the creation of one Dr Goh Keng Swee.

I am sure you too would find it quite extraordinary your mum's ability to pick losers in a major way consistently with no parallel anywhere in the corporate world. Micropolis folded within weeks of its purchase to the tune of $300M. Mind you, there has never been a coporate purchase of this sizes that folded as fast as Micropolis. Since then it has been rather a morbid trail of corporate bodybags and PR disasters ever since.

The second concern is the perception of governance that seems odd with acceptable standards, logic and plain common sense. Temasek is owned by the Minister of Finance and the CEO happens to be his wife, your mum. There is a clear conflict of interest and should not have occurred at all. Dhanabalan as the Chairman of Temasek does not absolve the conflict of interest in any way.

Lastly, do not ever grow up with the thought that Singapore needs your family or in anyway beholden to them. Your grandfather did develop Singapore in an extraordinary manner in the first 2 decades of this country's existence. However all that goodwill has since dissipated by various acts over the years. These include law suits to cripple those that are keen to help this country, unleashing the tax department on opponents and not to mention unlawful detention amongst others.

Do seriously consider your position when writing to the press again. Alternatively you might want to engage the services of PN Balji on how to write articles that will allow you to have your cake and eat it as well.

ps. do have a chat with your Dad about pink shirts and armpit deodorants.

LKY didn't develop Singapore. Singapore was developed with the help of many individuals, foreigners and other well-known politicians who helped to carve out the economic plans.

Singapore also had and continues to have a prominent port which is a very important natural resource.

Fixing the opposition started in the 60s with Operation Coldstore and continues until today with the ISA, lawsuits and the media playing major part in destroying any credible opposition and creating an atmosphere where able men were discouraged from politics.

Scroobal,

"Good points and good insults too!"

Forum writer mistaken for PM's son

The Straits Times

By Goh Chin Lian

SOME confusion has arisen over a letter writer to The Straits Times Forum page who shares the same name as a son of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

When Mr Li Hongyi read the comments to his letter on Singapore's political system on The Straits Times' online forum yesterday, he noticed the comments seemed to refer to PM Lee's second son of the same name.

'Your parents will be so proud of you, Mr Li,' wrote one netizen with the moniker ahbohling.

Li Hongyi's path into politics has been a foregone conclusion to me for a long time. Since 2006, I kinda knew he'd get into it- since there's a lot of pressure within the Lee/Li family to get their eldest into politics and to protect the unofficial monarchy.

But as I said, if Li Hongyi wants to simply ascent the throne like its still the 19th century, and expect all of Singapore to accept and kowtow to him, then he's terribly mistaken. Monarchical politics is hard to survive in any modern country which wants to join the club of developed countries that has many western democracies.

And Singapore will only fall back and slip up if such a monarchical political system is allowed to continue. LHL ascending the throne and having two Cixi dowagers behind him is bad enough. If Li Hongyi becomes the third in line, who wouldn't bet against that his father and another Cixi clone will be the next ones behind Li Hongyi?

Its simple, in conclusion, and I say this directly to Li Hongyi- if you want to be PM, you prove it mano a mano. You have to fight with your future opponent, man to man, face to face- like what Obama faced in the primaries and later against McCain. If you cannot do that, and instead try to rely on your parents and the name of your grandpa, then you're not a worthy successor as a PM. Instead you're just a coattail chaser.

LOL! Take out the first and fifth paragraphs to avoid the mistaken-identity context and it's still a fine letter. :D

Li Hongyi (born 1 May, 1987) is the second eldest son of Lee Hsien Loong, the current serving Prime Minister of Singapore, from his second marriage with Ho Ching, who heads Singapore's state investment firm Temasek Holdings.

[edit] Education
He was a student in the Gifted Education Programme and studied at Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) before moving on to Raffles Junior College. He is currently pursuing a degree in Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on a Singapore Public Service Commission scholarship.

[edit] Controversies
He courted controversy while doing his national service, when he bypassed the chain of command in an attempt to disrepute a fellow officer and his immediate superior, and disseminated an email complaint to hundreds of military personnel including the defense minister.

The contents of his letter[1] were leaked, to the general public and rapidly caught attention via the internet. In it, he stated concerns regarding "the quality control of SAF (Singapore Armed Force) officer" and raised specific dissatisfaction with a named fellow officer pertaining to the dereliction of duties, where he detailed his investigation into the officer's Absence Without Official Leave (AWOL). Having brought attention to his OC (Officer in Command), the offending officer was duly given the punishment of "10 extra duties". Having observed the punishment being dealt in the RO (Regimental Orders), he felt the severity of the transgression was taken lightly, and proceeded to summarily put this incident as his example of what was lacking and in contrast with the image of high standard set by SAF leadership.

In the aftermath, Li Hongyi was "formally charged and administered a reprimand after a summary trial" in a statement issued by the Ministry of Defense[2][3][4][5], for contravening the General Orders of adhering to the chain of command and "broadcasting his letter of complaint to many other servicemen". The officer, a Captain, whom he accused was court-martialed and fined.
