Success due to capable leaders, strong armed forces, vibrant economy By Li Xueying & Teo Wan Gek
MINISTER Mentor Lee Kuan Yew last night distilled the key ingredients that made Singapore's survival and progress possible over the last 45 years: a vibrant economy and a strong armed forces.
And the linchpin to both: a strong Government. Moving forward, these same attributes remain crucial to the country's continued success, he said.
'To build such a Singapore, we need an exceptionally strong Government, with the ablest, the toughest and most dedicated of leaders. We head-hunt for them, test them out in heavy responsibilities,' he said at the National Day dinner in his Tanjong Pagar constituency.
'Only such leaders can keep the economy growing and create good jobs and generate the revenue to pay for the equipment and training of our 3G SAF,' he added, referring to the Third Generation Singapore Armed Forces.
In turn, the 3G SAF 'provides the security and confidence of our people and of foreign investors, assured that we can more than defend ourselves'.
'If there is insecurity, there will be fewer investments. That means a poorer people and instability.'
