Apple are reportedly beginning an investigation into the various cases where iPhones have exploded in Europe, a sensible tactic considering the spate of hissing, steaming and smashing smartphones we’ve heard of over the past few weeks. The company maintains its belief that “these are isolated incidents and that there is not a general problem”, however.
That given, they’re also “trying to get more information on the details of the incidents” together with planning to perform “tests as necessary to investigate the possible cause.” The investigation was prompted by the European Commission, whose department of Health and Consumers seemingly asked Apple to confirm whether their products were safe.
As for Apple customer care, messages are mixed. The UK team admitted that they had heard of the ongoing issues, but declined to comment: “We are aware of these media reports, and we are waiting to receive the iPhones from the customers. Until we have the full details, we don’t have anything further to add.” However they’ve previously been accused of insisting on confidentiality agreements before addressing one teenage girl’s iPod touch which exploded, while more recently a French iPhone exploded and sent screen glass flying into a user’s eye.
