That's why if there's a piece of music i really like, i'll make an effort to listen to it on my HiFi.

To be honest, in my younger days, I did played a bit with hifi, not to the point of exoteric stuff because I looked upon those as diminishing returns but equipment founded on solid principles - matched pairs for better imaging, flat response, power reserves etc.

After getting married and focussing on a career, I got less time for serious listening and have only time to "catchup" in transition like in a car, on a plane etc. Also the family enjoys watching Chinese dramas together, not the Taiwanese soup dramas as suggested by GIMD but Hongkong dramas which we feel have better entertainment value. Hifi has given way to AV, basically using the same gear with added satellite speakers and an AV receiver instead of a stereo amp.

Believe it or not, I have more than 3000 songs and various pieces of music in my car for my personal enjoyment.

I actually have a purpose built AV room that doubles as a Karaoke room. On one end is a 100" projector screen and on both sides light blocking thick drapes and a carpet on the floor. The rest of the surfaces are left bare so as not to make it too dead. The sofas etc add to the acoustics. With 7 + 2 channels on the AV and Audyssey conditioning, a lot of the phasal information can be controlled.

Period instruments tend to sound dry with no decay but Gardiner's Beethoven did not betray that fact. However listening to Mozart symphonies on period instruments by Hogwood or Pinnock can be a quite a pain with the shrilling strings.

These effects could be a result of the miking. With Gardiner, DGG did a good job. However you are right that period instruments may suffer decay deficiency when compared to modern sonority enhanced instruments. But the characteristics of natural wood for example can compensate for this deficiency if careful miking is employed.
