<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I WAS at the hawker centre at Block 105, Hougang Avenue 1, Lorong Ah Soo on Thursday at about 11.15am when one of the escalators leading to the stalls at the second level broke down.
My wife, our daughter and I and a few senior citizens began to walk up the escalator.
Suddenly, the escalator restarted and began moving in the opposite direction without any warning. The three of us barely managed to keep our balance and turn around. The senior citizens had a more trying time adjusting to the reverse movement. Fortunately, none was hurt.
I scolded the technician at the foot of the escalator for not adhering to safety procedures. But instead of being apologetic, he rained abuse on me.
The town council should not engage contractors and technicians who do not know basic safety norms. One simple safety procedure is to ensure that no one is on the escalator before restarting it. Even that was not followed.
