SINGAPORE: An SAF regular serviceman, Second Warrant Officer Poh Eng Ann, died Friday night.

Mindef said on Saturday he was found unconscious on Friday evening at 6.05pm, in a flight crew room at the Paya Lebar Air Base.

This is the second death of an SAF regular serviceman in the last two weeks.

Mindef explained that the 36-year-old air force senior technician was attended to immediately by a medical team from the Paya Lebar Air Base Medical Centre where doctors continued their attempts to resuscitate him.

He was later sent to the Changi General Hospital where the SAF doctors and medics team continued their attempts to resuscitate him en route to the hospital.

But Second Warrant officer Poh was pronounced dead at 7.24pm at the Changi General Hospital.

The Defence Ministry and the SAF extend their deepest condolences to the family of the late Second Warrant Officer Poh.

Mindef is investigating the incident.

On April 17, another SAF regular serviceman, Master Warrant Officer P. Jegathesan, collapsed after completing a three-kilometre mass run at the SAFTI Military Institute Sports Complex.

45-year-old Jegathesan died at the National University Hospital.

I think should changed the wording from SAF to SAD.

Serve And Die!!!

I would be interesting if the facts of the case and the cause of death can be made known publicly cos there was no mention of any "activity" prior to him being found unconscious.

their heart cannot take it.. u drive car and eat good food and drink a lot and most probably smoke =then suddently u think u so fit and run then heart failure lor

why this kind of 'accident' keep happening? must have the reason that the doctors here still not discover? to prevent this from happening again, could more thorough medical check-ups on the NSF and Regulars be carried out to avoid this from repeating? could a more effective system of care/treatment be set up to tackle such situation? Loss of a life might be insignificant to the organisation or general public, but something very cruel to his/her family, especially when one is in the pink of his/her health.

To PAP government, Singaporeans are like trash, you die you own business, they dont fuck care. Singaporeans life are cheapskate and they must still do their National Service.

If it is Foreign Talents, I tell you even if they catch a cold, our PAP government will send all their top best medical teams to treat them as Foreign Talents are like their precious dogs or cats.

I really don't think Foreign and Singaporeans make the difference when it comes to SUDDEN DEATH. I recall Sudden death happened to some Foreign Talents Too.

SUDDEN DEATH has been with us long enough. If you look in to the old news media, you'll be very very surprise… some times shocking…

People die, in their sleep, running, sporting, sleep, driving, arguing… Old people, Young one, children even baby… that is true Fact. GO TO THE National Library, login into National library e-resource, Factival.com and search for "Sudden Death", and you will know how regularly it happened.

RSAF technician's death still a mystery

By Alvina Soh | Posted: 12 October 2011 1921 hrs

SINGAPORE: A coroner's inquest into the death of a Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) senior technician after an induction exercise left questions hanging.

State Coroner Imran Abdul Hamid said he needed further clarification on the cause of the death of 36-year-old Second Warrant Officer (2WO) Poh Eng Ann on 24 April, 2009.

He called for video or pictorial documentation of the activity.

2WO Poh, a father-of-two, was at an informal annual event to celebrate his recent promotion along with other officers at the Paya Lebar Air Base.

At the ceremony, he took part in a non-compulsory activity called the "tunnel crawl" where he had to crawl inside the engine of an aircraft.

Investigating Officer Johnny Tan told the court on Wednesday that this was part of a "military tradition" and was not considered a high-risk activity.

The court also heard that there was no time limit in the game.

2WO Poh, who was of medium-built, did not complain of any discomfort before and after the crawl.

He was observed to have performed it without difficulty.

However, he was found unconscious later that evening in a flight crew room.

He was attended to by the air base's medical team which tried to resuscitate him and continued doing so on the way to the Changi General Hospital.

2WO Poh, who had been with RSAF for 15 years, was pronounced dead at 7.24pm in hospital.

A Health Sciences Authority (HSA) autopsy report revealed that he had a pre-existing condition, whereby his liver was grossly enlarged by about 1.5 times its normal size due to fatty deposits.

Dr Wee Keng Poh, a consultant forensic pathologist of HSA, told the court that this made his liver softer than normal and more susceptible to rupture as a result of physical trauma.

Given 2WO Poh's stature, who was 1.74 metres tall and weighed 84 kilogrammes, his liver may have ruptured due to the tight space that he had to squeeze through.

2WO Poh's widow, Eileen Chua Li Eng, who was in court on Wednesday, asked about the lack of documentation of the event. The 35-year-old primary school teacher also wanted to know why the event had not been timed.

Speaking to Channel NewsAsia, she said her husband died about two weeks after his 39th birthday.

She said the loss had been a huge blow to their four-year-old son and two-year-old daughter.

She added that she was hoping to seek closure and will attend the next hearing on October 21.

Responding to media queries, the Ministry of Defence said it would not be appropriate for it to comment on the details of the incident as investigations are ongoing.
