SINGAPORE : An SMRT spokesman has said that some 5,000 passengers were affected when an eastbound train service was disrupted on Saturday afternoon.

A passenger had jumped onto the track at Tanah Merah MRT Station and was hit by a train heading towards Pasir Ris.

SMRT said that to maintain services on the East-West line, eastbound trains were turned around at Eunos and Tanah Merah MRT stations, while the middle platform at Tanah Merah MRT Station was used for eastbound train services.

Announcements were made in all stations and on affected trains to inform passengers of the delay and to advise them that the trains may be more crowded.

Normal service resumed at around 3.40pm.

Passengers who were unable to complete their journeys due to the disruption can claim a full fare refund from the Passenger Service Centre in any of the 58 SMRT stations, within the next three working days.

Half-height platform screen doors have not been installed at Tanah Merah Station.

So far, they have been installed at Pasir Ris MRT station, as well as Jurong East and Yishun stations.

Why do people want to jump track? Is it a quick and easy and cheap way of taking their own life?

Don't they know their bodies will be squashed into bits and pieces with their entrails spilling out and head squashed like a pumpkin? Do they want their children, wife, mother, father, grand mother and grandfather, friends, girlfriends etc to see what is left of them? Gruesome!

And just today in the ST someone was advocating assisted suicide - called euthanasia. Obviously the law professor doesn't know that in Singapore "self-service" is more popular!!!

Case for assisted suicides
A LAW professor and a deputy public prosecutor here have suggested that it be made legal for a terminally ill person to kill himself with his doctor's consent.

Sorry to be pedantic, but surely a person who kills himself by jumping track cannot be called a passenger right? I mean his intention was not to board the train to get from one MRT station to another!

jump train, jump flat, jump bail...murder-suicide...getting so bloody common..it's really scary here...hope brothers here don't get into such a mess...no way out of the predicament of those who decide to take their lives...end of the tunnel:nothing but despair, nothingness and worthlessness...no amount of counselling will prevent suicides once they have been contemplated...the end of the human being.

anyone contemplate suicide before? better don't toy with the idea. a thought can be translated into reality when the triggers are there!

so watch your thoughts very carefully. don't be a hero. be a worm in society.

I give you just ONE good reason not to.

The SCUMS are very happy that DESPERATE PEOPLE take their own life.

They are happy because they do not want to waste their time or money on desperate people.

What a tragedy! Is there no social safety net for these hopeless & lost souls. Suicides invariably fall into 3 broad categories-money-related; illness- related or relationships gone wrong. Despite our vast riches & 1st world status, we still lag behind others in the happiness index.:(

Yes, there is a social net. Alson known as PA. S$360 per month. Ypu want, pleae apply through your cc. They will come and interview you and ask you all sorts of question. One thing for sure, you can throw all your dignity away when they do that.

He tapped his ezlink link at the turnstile!, he is a passenger, but did not complete his journey, & his ezlink is confiscated...for SMRT can not collect the ending journey from ' the other side'...technically still a passenger, who had not paid his fare..can collect from his estate...minumum 90cts fare

If you tapped in at entrance but failed to tap out at exit, it's maximum fare, not minimum.
