Daphne is a Singapore-borned Singaporean staying in Australia. She graduated from NUS with LLB (Honours). She also has an Australian citizenship.

Daphne holds a Singapore passport and an Australian passport. She has renewed her Singaporean passport twice. Both times in her application form she was asked whether she holds another country's passport ..bothe times she answered yes..both times, her passport was renewed without complications. Recently, she wanted to renew her passport for the third time. this time, she was told by the counter staff that she cant hold dual citizenship and that she has to renounce her Singapore citizenship. Daphne objected and told the staff that she had renewed twice without complications and that it's her birthright to be Singapore Citizen and she will not renounce her Singapore Citizenship. The staff had no answer to her and referred her to her supervisor. The supervisor told Daphne that the law requires her to renounce her citizendship and sell her HDB flat.

Daphne insisted that she will not renounce her citizenship nor sell her HDB flat and challenged him and ICA to revoke her Singapore citizenship. The supervisor was stuck.

Daphne has written to TCH regarding her situation and requested him to look into her case. It has been three months since she wrote to TCH but he has not replied.

Daphne's friends are waiting to see what the mighty, arrogant but totally out of touch pap will do

If the PAP govt wants to squeeze 6 million population onto a small piece of land and make this place a cosmopolitan rich man's playground, sooner or later it'll have to allow for dual citizenship.

Unfortunately, the PAP will resist this because it can potentially open a can of worms. Two issues I can think of are CPF and NS.

Guess its only 1 can of worm which is the CPF issues....but its not easy to get Dual Citizenship esp for western countries...

NS is probably not an issue...South Koreans are allowed dual citizenships if they have completed/ exempted from their Military services.....

Thanks for the advice. I hope YI is as helpful as you have described him.

But the issue here is not abt getting help. It goes down to a basic issue whether the pap can revoke a singaporean's citizenship or deny a singaporean her passport just because another country grants her a citizenship.

Isn't it a birthright of anyone borned in SG to be a SG citizen? can that be taken away by the govt? That's what Daphne has challenged MHA to decide.

Does a Singaporean have to sell her HDB flat just because she accepts another country's citizenship?

Is the pap abusing the SG Constitution

Daphne has thrown the ball into MHA's court and told them that she is not renouncing her SG citizenship and niether is she selling her HDB flat. Let's see what MHA and HDB will do to her

That might result in a lot of unhappiness online though. Time for National Conversation on dual citizenship..

My guess is some idiot at ICA made the mistake the first time by renewing her passport when they should not have & when she renewed the second time, they just OK'd it without checking, the third time the mistake was spotted or maybe the counter staff were more on the ball & noticed she had filled in "Yes" to having dual citizenship. The ICA will now have to figure a way out for them as they should not have renewed her passport in the first & second time. No doubt this will be dealt with on an individual case basis & they are keen to keep it quiet.

Do the laws contravene the Constitution?

Even if it is lawful for MHA and HDB to revoke a singaporean's citizenship, can the pap bear the political cost? will the pap sacrifice some singaporeans to keep many in line?

I dont think it is a straight forward case. It's a delicate issue...even if MHA and HDB are legally empowered to revoke citizenships, do they really want to stick with such outdated policies or would the pap seek to embrace Singaporeans who seek to be a global citizen?

Should the pap make a virtue out of necessity in this changing world rather than to stick to obsolete policies.
