AT FACE value, would you expect an unrestricted annual pass to the new Universal Studios Singapore to cost 700 per cent more than a similar annual pass to Universal Studios Hollywood and 250 per cent more than one to Disneyland, especially when you consider how much bigger those parks are?
According to the websites of all three parks, a Universal Studios Singapore pass costs S$1,098, versus S$140 (US$99) for Universal Studios Hollywood and S$615 (US$439) for Disneyland. The Disneyland unrestricted annual pass even includes admission to the adjacent amusement park, California Adventure.
All three parks offer a host of benefits to annual pass holders such as food and hotel discounts, special events and free parking.
In addition, all three offer restricted annual passes (good only on certain days such as Universal Studios Singapore's Fun Pass for S$318). However, the unrestricted annual pass is most germane to families because typically restricted passes block most popular days like school holidays.
Universal Studios Singapore is entitled to charge whatever price it thinks the market will bear. Eventually, Singaporeans will vote with their wallets.
