Yip Kuan Harry says:
I don't know why Amazon applies a different marketing strategy in Singapore from that of the US.
In Singapore:-
1. Audible's audiobook selections for Singapore are a much reduced subset of a larger selection that is available for the US.
2. It is not possible to buy the Kindle from Amazon directly through your account.
3. It is not possible to download Kindle books from the Amazon website even if you have a Kindle (bought in US) in your possession.
4. However, it is possible to buy any Amazon books directly, including audiobooks in CD format but not in downloadable e-format.
I don't think this marketing strategy by Amazon is based on a rational commercial decision as there is a huge demand for Kindle and eBooks in Singapore. I bet Singapore is probably a larger market than New Zealand or the Philippines, where the Kindle is available. I can't see why Amazon adopt this business attitude to Singapore, which seems to me to be irrational and strange.
Maybe there are other non-trade issues involved, such as legal or political implications. Anyway, I hope the Singapore Government look into this matter and see why is there a 'barrier to trade' on Kindle and its products.
