On Sunday morning June 8, we reached out to friends in one of Kaki Bukit's two markets and hawker centres. It's something we look forward to doing as its a pleasure to hear stories that long-time residents and business owners in Kaki Bukit share with us.
511 Market holds an iconic status close to the heart of the community. It has grown and matured with the rest of the estate, and many proprietors of the hawker centre, and the wet market in particular, have been rooted here since the estate came into being.
With the passage of time, an ageing demographic coupled with changing consumption patterns have thinned out the once bustling crowds, that once thronged the aisles of the market in its heydays. Now, stall holders say that their business volume is a shadow of what it once used to be.
"We can't really make money anymore. This is at best a way for us to pass time," an Auntie selling vegetables wistfully said.
Have you visited your local wet market recently?
Come by soon, and support your local community and its businesses if you can.
