Q: How about in terms of temperament? Would you say (elder son and Prime Minister Lee) Hsien Loong also had the best of both from you and Mrs Lee?
I've read this British psychologist Hans Eysenck, who said in his book that boys tend to follow their mothers because the X gene is bigger than the Y gene, the male gene. So they have more of the mother's qualities than the father's. Girls have double Xs from the mother and the father, so they tend to have more of the father's qualities.
Empirically I would say that's not far off the mark. The differences may not be very great but I think there's a difference. Loong is a different personality from me. He's more, how would I say, equable - less intense than my daughter who takes after me.
Ling (daughter Wei Ling) is very intense. She's got no children, so she writes this and does many things outside neurology. She gravitated to an activist role. Her extra energy made her run 'The Tent' to get girls who've been led astray. She raises money for this purpose. She should have married and had two children, then things would have happened differently. (Laughs) But what to do? She was happy as she was, so that's that. They lead their own lives
