Air steward charged with stabbing wife in Sengkang flat

An air steward allegedly stabbed his wife in her abdomen before he attempted to jump off a parapet outside his home.

Witnesses told Chinese-language evening daily Lianhe Wanbao that the man’s Indonesian maid held on to her employer’s waist and stopped him from falling over.

Said a neighbour, who lives on the 13th storey: “The man’s mother and a man (who is believed to a friend) also held on from each side until the police came.”

She added:

“I asked the neighbour’s friend if they needed help but he said they had called the police.”

The man allegedly ran out of his home after he had stabbed his wife, and attempted to kill himself.

The alleged stabbing happened on Friday afternoon at a five-room unit on the 15th storey of an HDB block in Sengkang.

Police said they received a call at 2.10pm requesting assistance at the unit.

A police spokesman said last night:

“Upon our arrival, a woman in her 30s was found to have sustained injuries to her abdomen. She was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

“A man in his 40s was arrested in relation to the case. He was charged this morning (Saturday) with attempted murder.”

If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in jail and a fine. If he is found to have caused hurt, he can be jailed for life, or up to 20 years, and shall be liable to caning or a fine or both.

Checks by The New Paper on Sunday revealed that the man had a divorce hearing on Thursday morning in the Subordinate Court.

The divorce was filed by his wife. It is not known if they had turned up for the hearing.

An Indonesian maid, who works on the 13th storey, told Lianhe Wanbao that she heard a commotion around 1pm on Thursday.

The maid claimed that she was able to see into the unit from her employer’s home, and said that she saw the couple arguing.

Police confirmed that a call was received that day, but when they went down to the unit, there was no case.

Another neighbour told Lianhe Wanbao that the couple, who are both good-looking, had always been loving.

“Until just two or three days ago, when there were shouts coming from their home,” the neighbour told the evening daily.

The victim is said to be a former flight stewardess.

The couple have two sons, aged six and eight.

Other than the family of four, the man’s mother and an Indonesian maid is said to live in the unit.

Neighbours were apparently alerted by a woman’s cries of pain.

A neighbour who lives on the 11th storey told Lianhe Wanbao that she was taking an afternoon nap when she heard the cries.

She said: “The woman was crying very pitifully, and a boy was shouting. A man was also shouting, but I could not make out what it was about.”

Suicide is one of the most peculiar phenomenon. It cuts across IQ, wealth and ability range of individuals. Professors, scientists, even the very wealthy have done it. Mostly due to stress, emotional turmoil, mental health.

In Singapore, the very rich tend to get their private doctors to issue a death certificate which is quite easy if there other medical history to tie it to. Worse case scenario is accidental overdose at Coroner's inquiry even though the family knows that the individual has been suicidal for sometime. Done to protect the emotional state of children and elderly parents.

Only when death occurs within 24 hrs of hosital admission, private doctors cannot intervene.

One of the saddest case is a State Counsel, scholar and it involved 2 prominent personalities. I met this guy, very confident, very clear in his thoughts etc. I was shocked.

There has been one prominent case within the ruling family.
