Several outlets reported that the plane had taken an “unusual route,” though it wasn’t immediately clear why.

It’s monsoon season in the region and there were heavy thunderstorms in the area, but it’s not clear whether severe weather played a role in the plane’s disappearance.

The unknown status of the plane comes five months after a Malaysia Airlines passenger flight was shot down by pro-Russian rebels over Eastern Ukraine and nine months after a different Malaysia Airlines flight went missing over the Indian Ocean and never surfaced.

(Updated 1:03 p.m.; refresh page for updates) JAKARTA - An AirAsia flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore lost contact with air traffic control on Sunday, Indonesian media said, citing a Transport Ministry official.

Transport Ministry official Hadi Mustofa said the aircraft, flight number QZ 8501, lost contact with the Jakarta air traffic control tower at 6:17 a.m local time. (2317 GMT).

The Airbus 320-200 had 155 passengers and crew on board, another Indonesian Transport official said.

Mustofa said the plane had asked for an unusual route before it lost contact.

The flight had been due in Singapore at 8:30 a.m. Singapore time (0030 GMT). The Singapore airport said on its website the status of the flight was "delayed."

According to Indonesian TV, there were 149 Indonesians, three Koreans, one Singaporean, one Briton and one Malaysian on board.

In a statement on its Facebook page, Kuala Lumpur-based AirAsia confirmed that the flight was missing. "AirAsia Indonesia regrets to confirm that flight QZ8501 from Surabaya to Singapore has lost contact with air traffic control at 07:24hrs this morning," it said.

"At the present time we unfortunately have no further information regarding the status of the passengers and crew members on board, but we will keep all parties informed as more information becomes available.

"The aircraft was an Airbus A320-200 with the registration number PK-AXC.

"At this time, search and rescue operations are in progress and AirAsia is cooperating fully and assisting the rescue service."

According to a report from CNN meteorologist Derek Van Dam, there were "heavy thunderstorms" in the region. "But keep in mind, turbulence doesn't necessarily bring down airplanes," Van Dam said in the report.

The incident comes at the end of a disastrous year for Malaysia's airlines.

National flag carrier Malaysia Airlines lost two aircraft this year.

Its flight MH370 went missing on March 8 on a trip from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew on board.

On July 17, Flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board. — Reuter
