Fire breaks out at People's Park Complex
SINGAPORE : People's Park Complex in Chinatown had to close for the day on Wednesday, due to a fire in the afternoon.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the fire at about 3.30pm.
The SCDF said the fire was contained to a storeroom on the fifth floor. Earlier, eyewitnesses had told MediaCorp they spotted the blaze engulfing the fourth and fifth floors of the building.
Plumes of smoke made it difficult to breathe.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control after a few hours.
So far, there are no reports of injuries.
Shoppers and retailers from the first to sixth floors were immediately evacuated.
The SCDF said the residential block was not affected.
Police cordoned off the area, while Eu Tong Sen Street was closed to traffic except buses.
One person said: "When I passed by, I saw many people looking upwards. Then I saw smoke. Initially there wasn't a lot of smoke. After 30 to 60 minutes, the fire got bigger. At first, there was only one hole in the building. Then, there was a second hole in the building."
The authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. - CNA/ms
