<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I REFER to the article, "29 jailed for lying about their bosses", last Thursday.
Action has been taken quickly to respond to the plight of our local workforce. What has been done for the migrant workforce?
Restrictive work permit policies that prevent workers from crossing sectors for work should be reviewed. The foreign worker levy fund that has accumulated millions should be directed towards the developmental, welfare and social security needs of such unfortunate workers in this downturn.
A foreign worker employment exchange service could also be set up to match employers with out-of-work migrant workers. More indeed should also be done in collaboration with sending countries for the protection of the potential victims of fraud and exploitation. Poverty and ignorance are fertile grounds for human traffickers.
