A FIRE broke out yesterday afternoon in the Marina Bay area, but was promptly doused by the civil defence force. The fire, which erupted along a side road, involved acetylene cylinders used in construction, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said yesterday.
<TABLE class=picBoxL cellSpacing=2 width=100 align=left><TBODY><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR class=caption><TD></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>The incident was reported at 2.41 pm and the flames were under control within 10 minutes of the civil defence's arrival at the site, the statement added. No one was injured in the incident.
SCDF was alerted to a fire involving acetylene cylinders along a side road beside a construction site off Central Boulevard, which leads to Marina Way. SCDF officers found three racks containing some 18 acetylene cylinders which had fallen onto the road from a moving lorry. As a result of the impact from the accident, five of the acetylene cylinders had ruptured - resulting in the fire.
Several major projects are under construction in Singapore's new downtown Marina Bay - including Singapore's first integrated resort Marina Bay Sands and Marina Bay Financial Centre, an office project jointly developed by Keppel Land, Hongkong Land and Cheung Kong Holdings. Both projects were not affected by the fire.
