Stressed out by rat race? Try new 5Cs

<!-- by line --><!-- end by line -->

WITH the price spikes in property and cars, one cannot help but feel that life in Singapore is getting costlier and more stressful.
Add to that the appeal to reproduce - to stem a declining birth rate - and it feels like we are being squeezed from all sides.
The pursuit of the 5Cs - cash, credit card, car, country club membership and condo - is driving the obsession to work, work and work, and not fall behind in the rat race.
Perhaps it is time to offer a different solution and lessen the stress in life.
If we understand that none of our possessions will matter when we die, and we cannot take them with us, and that we cannot really decide what happens to our legacy, perhaps the material things in life will seem less important.
Will owning a bigger house or a nicer car make a bigger difference in life than a loving family?
What is the price and cost of fighting for every dollar in exchange for a stressful life?
When we die, will our last thoughts be about the house we dreamt about and the unfinished assignments at work, or will they be about our loved ones?
We will have lived a sad, empty life if we are surrounded by things we own, but no one we love.
So how about a different set of 5Cs: care, concern, compassion, communication and contentment.
Can we be content with what we have, and instead turn to our loved ones?
Forget the Tweets and Facebook and ask ourselves when was the last time we talked to a friend face to face.
Life in 21st century Singapore is stressful, but with a fresh set of 5Cs, we may yet make our days happy.

Not really. I don't think anyone can bring their friends and relatives with them when they die either, even in group suicides (practiced by Satanists and Japs). They mostly go different ways, in heaven or in hell.

Definitely. In this world most people can't have their cake and eat it, so having none of both is definitely WORSE.

Huh? What a corny question. This article must be written by a woman.

Erm, I'm sorry. In many things there is no duality. Either you go for things or you go for people. Very rarely do you get both, and in equal abundance. It's either you have a lot of friends and have good relationships with them, but you will always have to cope with monetary problems throughout the rest of your life and they couldn't help you much but whine along with you and occasionally, leech off of you even as you are all at about the same level of mediocrity :p, or you live in a beautiful mansion with a nice garden and with everything you wanted ie furniture, artwork and gadgets but everyday you'd be feeling extremely lonely and cut-off from society and the rest of the world. ;)

You stupid idealistic romantic loonie.
