Slice of thai society mango today. Critique on hoo-hah after a car park incident last week, with merc lady kicking a pregnant mom

COMMENTARY

Car park spat sparks vitriol against rich

The uproar sparked by accusations a navy admiral's wife kicked a pregnant woman during a petty spat, then tried to pay her off to keep quiet, says a lot about what is wrong with Thai society.

The case should not have become an issue at all, but instead it ended up consuming the whole nation as a symbol of class struggle, complete with criticism about how the rich and powerful influence the justice process and get away with wrongdoing.
1307320.jpg

The hubbub over this relatively small incident should inform the powers-that-be about how perceived inequalities -- and the widespread feeling that the system is malleable for the privileged few -- remain prevalent among the population.

But it's not completely clear who did what in the chain of incidents which has dominated forums in the online community.
Police are still investigating physical assault charges. According to news reports, the incident occurred on Oct 14. It started when a two-year-old opened the door of the car he was in, hitting the car next to it, a red-plated Mercedes.

The child's aunt apologised to the Mercedes's owner. The child's mother -- who is four months pregnant -- suggested they settle the damage through their insurance companies. The elder woman, however, was reportedly incensed by the accident and launched a verbal tirade against the child and his mother.

The aunt became scared, and brought the child back into the car. For some reason, she again scraped the side of the Merecedes when she closed the car door. The second strike reportedly sent the Mercedes's owner into a rage. A physical fight then occurred between the three women. The pregnant woman claimed the Mercedes owner kicked her while the elder woman said she had only raised her leg to defend herself.

A video clip of the incident was unclear. It only showed the women seemingly in a quarrel with the Mercedes owner, who at the end falls on her bottom. A group of people who claimed to witness the incident said she fell down on her own after kicking the pregnant woman. Another claimed she was pushed by the aunt.

The quarreling parties filed physical assault complaints with the Thong Lor police station, after which the pregnant woman felt pain in her stomach and asked the police to take her to a nearby hospital where she was admitted overnight. The Mercedes owner, meanwhile, reportedly called her husband and told him to show up at the police station wearing his full rear admiral uniform.

The story went viral as soon as it was shared on Facebook. Most people condemned the Mercedes owner for assaulting the pregnant woman over what appeared to be minor damage to her expensive car.
Many also took issue with the claim she told her husband to show up at the police station in his navy uniform (which he did). Was it an attempt to intimidate the other party? What was the need to advertise that her husband is a military man, and a high-ranking one at that?

The controversy did not end there. Three days later, former beauty queen Panadda Wongpudee held a press conference saying the two sides had settled the dispute through mediation.
Present at the event were the pregnant woman, her husband, the Mercedes owner and Rear Admiral Somchai Na Bangchang, who represented the navy.

The Mercedes owner presented a basket of flowers to the pregnant woman although she did not offer an apology. Instead she said there are always two sides to every story. The physical assault case is still under way, as it is a criminal complaint that can't be settled.

The press briefing stoked further controversy. Some people questioned the role of Ms Panadda who claimed to be a mediator but gave the Mercedes owner more time to tell her side of the story. She also apparently defended the woman's husband, saying the rear admiral had done many good things for the country.

But how did the rear admiral's qualities have anything to do with the case? Why did the navy send a representative to attend the mediation, which only concerns the Mercedes owner and the pregnant woman?

Even now, the controversy is raging as those who sympathise with the pregnant woman threaten to rally at the bank where the Mercedes driver works.

The case shows how the perception of inequality and injustice can turn a tiff over car doors bumping into physical violence and public protest. Our society is fraught with such issues, making it like a powder keg waiting to explode.

Heart warming piece on local rescuing an old tourist couple.

KRABI
Top honour for man for rescuing tourists

Nation: SITTHICHAI SIKHAWAT

A KRABI man who risked his life to rescue a Norwegian couple stuck in riverside m&d will be conferred with a "Seu Samart" (honorary jacket) by HRH Princess Bajra Kitiyabha during a ceremony in Bangkok on Friday.

Chat Ubonjinda, 44, will also get a chance to meet with Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha during his trip to the capital.

But before Chat could board an Air Asia flight to Bangkok at around 4pm yesterday, officials from the Krabi Red Cross office had to provide him with medical treatment for his back pain, which he sustained when he let the couple step on his back to escape the m&d.

To praise his good deed and sacrifice, the Krabi Provincial Electricity Authority will take care of a temporary electric meter shared by Chat's five adjoining family houses and a power bill worth almost Bt10,000 a month, while the Muang Krabi Municipality will build a public road leading to his home so that electricity poles can be erected.

Chat welcomed the initiatives as they would help his family save money since his work laying foundation pillars has dried up.

THAI finances 'critical', panel member says

The financial health of Thai Airways International (THAI) remains critical, a senior member of a committee that oversees the airline says.

Thaweesak Koranantakul, of the State-Owned Enterprises Policy Committee known as the "super board", said the airline's rehabilitation measures have not improved its bottom line. Mr Thaweesak said the national carrier is "not yet in the clear" despite its management's efforts to reverse the dire situation.

Under the rehabilitation plan, THAI intends to improve its finances and return to profitability in January.
The plan involves suspending unprofitable flight routes, adjusting marketing strategies, selling assets and unused aircraft, restructuring manpower including a massive early retirement programme and improving non-core businesses.

The company plans to have 1,400 staff enter early retirement by this year as a part of its long-term plan to cut 5,000 staff in total. THAI is also considering cutting flights on loss-making routes by 5% from October this year to March next year.
The company's target is to slash between 8 and 9 billion baht in costs this year.
1309952.jpg

Mr Thaweesak said the review of the implementation of the rehabilitation showed that the airline's operations in the third quarter fell short of target especially in the area of cost reduction.

While the airline was supposed to reduce costs by 10 billion baht, it managed to cut only two billion baht, he said. Moreover, revenue generating was also below the target.

"If things continue like this, it won't be good," he said. Mr Thaweesak's remarks came after the committee's meeting with THAI's board on Monday to review the airline's implementation of its rehabilitation plan.

THAI president Charamporn Jotikasthira said yesterday the restructuring programme was progressing, but the airline had not yet cut costs or increased revenue.

Mr Charamporn said there was time to improve the situation if efforts were intensified in the remainder of the 18-month rehabilitation programme which was designed to strengthen the company's ability to be competitive.

He said the airline's business section has started to target routes which fly over Thailand such as Frankfurt to Bali. The measure is expected to significantly boost ticket sales.

"After this we will focus on measures to increase revenue. The plan is good and doesn't need any revision. We just intensify our efforts," he said.

Mr Charamporn said the airline's target that it would become profitable in January remained unchanged.

You have any comment about the sauce? Many Singaporeans seem to like it.

It's ok but when I have their green wonton mee(without the wonton) I actually prefer some of the sauces available in Spore. Find it strange that you can order the noodles without the char siew meat or veggies:confused:

Unfortunately the portion of the noodles is kinda small but that's ok because when I am in LOS I eat too much:o

The way to eat the green noodle is to soak them in the boiling water for a while. Then put the noodle in your bowl and take the water from the steam to your bowl and enjoy it. At least that is how i eat it.

or you can just do dry.. pour some sauce over it and mix it..then dry noodle treat..

oh man.. i just get orgasm even by talking about it.

KASETSART UNIVERSITY

Varsity gets Thailand's first 'mobile phone lane' for smartphone junkies

VISARUT SANKHAM
THE NATION October 22, 2015 1:00 am

30271375-01_big.jpg

THAILAND'S first footpath "mobile phone lane" for pedestrians has been implemented at Bangkok's Kasetsart University (KU) to accommodate tardy students who are sick of bumping into smartphone users on their way to class.

The 500-metre footpath was divided into two lanes to separate phone users from non-users. The initiative, proposed by KU students and sponsored by Toyota Thailand, was implemented on a trial basis until November 15 in front of Central |Building No 1, which has a lot of foot traffic during rush hour. The results of the initiative will be assessed by the Performance Management Strategies team to compare the numbers from before and after the dual-lane footpath was implemented.

During the morning rush-hour period, many students are in a hur-ry to attend classes and their path |is blocked by others who text and talk on their cellphones, said Natdanai Adisornpunkul, a third-year marketing major at KU's Business Administration Faculty. Rushing students resort to walking on the road to get to where they |are going, which is dangerous, he said.

After brainstorming and researching for solutions on the Internet, his group came up with the "mobile phone lane" and they called the project "Anyone can change", Natdanai said. The project comprises the "mobile phone lane" and four warning signs with three mascots to warn students of oncoming traffic while crossing the road.

It was submitted to the Toyota Challenge 2015, which invited university students to come up with marketing ideas to solve on-campus problems.

Natdanai said the team has so far spent Bt6,000 out of the Bt20,000 project fund.

The other team members are Piyawan Kovitrojanapong, Namfon Chalongsukwat and Wannaporn Wuthapanich.

"We need to promote this scheme, which was only set up on Sunday, because many people are still unaware of it," he said, adding that they would spend a week to observe people's feedback.

"As people nowadays spend so much time looking at their mobile phone screens, they could get hurt if they are unaware of their surroundings. This project will help to boost public safety, while encouraging people to adhere to traffic regulations," he added.

Nutpapat Jarupan, a fourth-year tourism major, said she thought the scheme, which she heard about from peers, was so interesting that she tried using it. She said more public relations should be done to achieve the plan's goals.

Wimonrut Cheeramok, another fourth-year tourism major, said she tried walking on the lane yesterday and noticed that many students were unaware of it.

"I think KU should promote it and inform to students more to boost the scheme's effectiveness," she added.

Pasorn Saowaratthitada, Toyota Thailand's PR officer, said that if the project wins the contest, it would be recommended to Kasetsart University, which would then decide if the scheme can be permanently implemented.

Last September, China's Chongqing City made headlines with a light-hearted plan to set up a "mobile phone lane" for pedestrians on the footpath of a short section of the downtown road for people with smartphones. The initiative was apparently inspired by a US model in which a similar dual-lane arrangement was created in Washington, DC, in last July as part of a televised behavioural experiment.

Wouldn't mind excusing both ladies for promoting beer in their instagram:p

c1_739512_151022123419_620x413.jpg

Video jockey admits Instagram 'selfie' was beer promotion

Virithipa "VJ Woonsen" Pakdeeprasong has admitted she had been asked to promote Chang Beer when she posted a picture of herself with a bottle of the brew on her Instagram account, according to a senior health official.

Ms Virithipa, accompanied by her lawyer, met officials on Wednesday evening to give information about the alleged social media campaign, Saman Futrakul, director of the Office of the Alcohol Control Committee under the Disease Control Department, said on Thursday.

The well-known video jockey admitted she had been promoting the beer, not the drinking water of the same brand as earlier claimed, said Dr Saman. The post showed she had intentionally acted for a commercial purpose, he added.

‘’Khun Woonsen (her nickname) cooperated and gave useful information about this case. She posted (a picture of herself holding a bottle of the beer) after being contacted to do so. She was not acting playfully and her post was aimed at promoting beer, not drinking water. It is clearly shown that this was done for a commercial purpose and such posts are likely to be organised,’’ said Dr Saman.

Ms Virithipa was willing to cooperate fully with the Public Health Ministry to launch a campaign against drinking alcohol, he said.
Earlier, Ms Virithipa, who is also a TV host and actress, and Nonthaporn "Ying Yae" Theerawattanasook admitted they posted pictures of themselves with bottles of Chang Beer on their Instagram accounts.

The pair, however, denied being paid by the brewing firm, claiming they only wanted to help a close friend promote the product. Police did not disclose their friend's name.

An investigation was launched after the pair and 22 other celebrities were found to have posted photos of themselves holding bottles of Chang Beer around the same time on Instagram. All carried similar messages encouraging people to drink the beer. Their actions raised suspicions in some quarters of tacit advertising aimed at social media users.

While the brewery denies encouraging the celebrities to push its products, anti-alcohol campaigners see the coincidence as a subtle social media campaign, using celebrities posting selfies with bottles of the beer.

Singer and actor Pakorn "Dome" Lam was among the 24 celebrities. Seven of them, including Waranchaya "VJ Ja" Chindarakwong and Virithipa, also appeared on Chang's website to promote the beer's new bottle colour.

The ministry insisted that the celebrities who posted photographs of themselves holding Chang beer bottles on social media have clearly violated the alcohol control law.

INTERNET PROTEST
International hackers strike
c1_739884_151023073515_620x413.jpg

The international hacking collective called Anonymous declared cyberwar on the Thai government Thursday over its policy to consolidate a single internet gateway.

The main target of the attack was CAT Telecom Pcl, the state-owned company which has been designated by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and the cabinet to control the future gateway.

Early Friday, Twitter accounts apparently operated by Anonymous members showed parts of what it said were thousands of CAT customer accounts, including logins, passwords and personal IDs including Thai government ID names and numbers.
The CAT website was taken off the internet for several hours late Thursday. CAT's home page, cattelecom.com, was back online early Friday.

1315932.jpg

But the biggest event of the hack as described by Anonymous was the release of previously undisclosed details about the single gateway plan.

Reporter Don Sambandaraksa of the Telecomasia news site said Anonymous had emailed "a set of leaked documents" showing new details on the gateway project.

"TelecomAsia has received a set of leaked documents that would suggest the Single Gateway project has been a priority and pushed by the highest levels of the army for years", Mr Don wrote on Thursday.

It listed documents dated as early as 2006, allegedly showing that the military has been deeply involved in a project for an "offensive defence" division to control the internet in Thailand.

According to Mr Don, "One slide in particular listed target media that needed to be put under surveillance - Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Wordpress, Blogger, Flickr, Instagram and Tumblr." Other "unfriendly" media included the Thai internet forum board Pantip.com. The only messaging service mentioned was Line, he said.

EARLIER REPORT
Anonymous, the international network of internet activists and hackers, has launched "Operation Single Gateway" targeting the Thai government, amid concerns that the military regime's plan to tighten control of the internet is still alive.

The group announced the campaign in a statement on its Twitter account, @anonymousasia.
"We saw the situation in Thailand for the past months going too far, restricting basic access to freedom of speech, protests and basic human rights against anyone who criticised the Thai Junta," the statement said.

"The latest project of the Thai military government is to deploy a single gateway in order to control, intercept and arrest any persons not willing to follow the Junta orders and your so-called moral," said Anonymous, whose slogan is: "You can arrest us, but you can't arrest an idea".

News of the proposal for a single gateway emerged last month in a leaked cabinet document. One of the aims of the "Great Firewall of Thailand", as critics dubbed it, would be to help authorities curb "inappropriate" content including lese majeste.

The public, the IT industry and businesses condemned the plan, saying that not only would it curb freedom of speech but also that it would lead to slower internet services, higher costs and economic losses. No IT companies would be interested in investing in Thailand despite the country's stated aim to promote a digital economy, business leaders said.

The Anonymous statement also criticised the appointment of an army officer to head state-run CAT Telecom.
"It is unacceptable that you promote your own people, army executives at the head of the largest telecommunication operator: CAT Telecom. Any corporations or individuals helping to deploy this single gateway will be targeted by any electronic means," the statement said.

Col Sanpachai Huvanandana, the new CAT Telecom CEO, said earlier this week that CAT was pushing ahead with a rebranded single gateway, claiming it would reduce costs for Thailand’s internet service providers.

The army also announced on Tuesday that it would establish a new cyber warfare unit to counter growing cyber threats.
Gen Sommai Kaotira, the supreme commander of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, had said that the new unit would comprise all three armed forces and the police. He added that the unit was part of a broader five-year roadmap.

Although authorities have said recently that the single gateway plan would be scrapped, activists say it could always be revived unless a clear, formal commitment is made to abandon it.

@F5CyberArmy, a group of Thai gamers, posted around 6pm that CAT Telecom has been compromised. It showed what it claimed to be a list of CAT customer data.

Some people just go in to order duck / char siew noodle bowl without getting the steamboat.

Oh I see. I was thinking of those small servings that you get from single dishes.
Nowadays I try to avoid large meals like the steamboat because I pick up weight easily

Nowadays I am getting more health conscious. I sometimes visit Sizzler not for their steaks but because they have a good Salad bar.

you can order single dishes for steam boat too . that is not a lot if you just order a few single dishes. However, it will be more expensive than the veggie set if you sum it up.
