Half a million foreign tourists expected for Songkran festivities
SUCHAT SRITAMA
THE NATION April 9, 2015 1:00 am

THE TRADITIONAL Thai New Year Festival is expected to draw 500,000 foreign tourists and generate income of Bt14.5 billion.

Meanwhile, 2 million local residents are expected to travel within the country during the three-day Songkran Festival.

Minister of Tourism and Sports Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul yesterday said that international arrivals to Thailand during April 1-4 were 337,490, up 37.8 per cent from the same period last year.

She said that 500,000 foreign tourists would travel into the Kingdom during Songkran. Meanwhile, about 2 million locals are expected to travel within the country during the annual holiday. Kobkarn said hotels in major tourist destinations such as Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, and Samui would run at 78 per cent average occupancy, a 6.2-per-cent growth from the same time last year.

Hotels in Phuket will be operating at the highest rate of 87 per cent occupancy while business at hotels in Bangkok will grow by 12.2 per cent. The capital alone is expected to receive about 2.5 million visitors.

According to Kobkarn, the Thai government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Russia in a bid to revive the number of tourists from Russia. Last year, the number of Russians travelling to Thailand was 1.6 million, dropping more than 5 per cent year on year.

Travel and hotel operators involved with Russian markets said that it was very hard to restore business from Russia this year due to its economic slowdown. However, Juthaporn Rengronasa, deputy governor and acting governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), said that the recent lifting of martial law would have a positive result in terms of foreigners visiting Thailand during Songkran.

She said that although Japan and South Korea are banning Thai chartered flights, it should not affect overall foreign tourist arrivals into the Kingdom. "Despite Japan and South Korea's ban on chartered flights from Thailand, the effect of the ban will be more apparent on outbound flights from Thailand to the two countries whereas tourists from Japan and South Korea will still be able to enter Thailand via scheduled flights," she said. TAT is confident that Thailand will have roughly 500,000 visitors during Songkran and about Bt14.5 billion in revenue is expected to be generated.

The Nation April 10, 2015 1:00 am

Immigration police have arrested 11 foreign fugitives in six different cases including an alleged Pakistani passport forger, an alleged French online trade fraudster and a Finn wanted for fraud and tax evasion.

Pol Lt-General Sakda Chuenpakdee, commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, told a press conference yesterday that Pakistani national Abdul Kanni, or Babu Rafik, 60, was arrested in Bangkok's Bang Kho Laem district last Friday for allegedly forging and selling passports to trans-national criminals over two decades.

French national Stephane Jacques Roulin was apprehended in Satun on March 25 following a request from the French authorities for his arrest.

Roulin was wanted by the Montpellier Court for duping people out of at least 100,000 euros per person in a scam to buy luxury cars online. The total figure is expected to rise as more victims file complaints.

Finnish fraud and tax-evasion suspect Tuukka Tapio Rautajuuri, 54, who allegedly owed Bt15 million to the Finnish government, was arrested in Chon Buri on Tuesday.

American Josef Cohen, 60, who had been sought for assault, was arrested in Bangkok's Bang Kapi district on Tuesday.

Hungarian Kocsis Szabolcs Laszlo, 41, who was wanted for allegedly smuggling 35 kilograms of marijuana from the Netherlands to Hungary on seven occasions, was arrested in Phuket on March 15.

Six South Korean men in their 30s were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly operating an online football gambling website in Bangkok's Suan Luang district.

The suspects reportedly confessed that they took bets on South Korean football matches from 100 members in exchange for a Bt60,000 monthly payment each.

If one drive north of Khon Kaen city next province is Udonthani and then Nong Khai which borders Laos.

Besides Tom Yam and Somtam another popular Thai food is Gai Yang literally Chicken Grill. The most famous gai yang is of course Khao Suan Kwan Gai Yang, Khao Suan Kwang is the name of a town located north of Khon Kaen city which borders Udonthani province, yes its said that the original Gai Yang comes from here.

You'll find probably more than a hundred joints all selling gai yang however most are not delicious. I've already made the selection and if anyone is interested there is the GPS location http://goo.gl/maps/wF0Lu

Name of the shop is ToTo Gaiyang
