A Singaporean's guide to living in Thailand

Strange that Chiangmai is so popular with farang miles away. Chinagmai is just a stone throw away from Sinkieland.

Not surprising, as Sg's only a tiny red dot with 5mil (40% foreigners).

Yes it is voted as the safest and ideal place for farang to bath in the sun and enjoy life with their pension.
These farang are sun worshippers and they love all the sun they can get in Prathet Thai.

Saw a kind act by a farang in CM. A Thai auntie was confused and felt dizzy on the road divider. A farang appeared out of nowhere and immediately dashed to rescue her without any thought for his own safety.

Yo, Roti... I get confused, and keep on driving in circles around the moat ...needing some landmark to get in or out. Blame it on my age and poor sense of directions, perhaps needing SOS by a local :p

Take it easy - still got hope since, from what I've seen and heard, you don't seem to have any problem with driving in circles with women :D
Why don't you use a GPS?

For me, it's easier when you think that the roads are one way on each side of the moat. Landmarka I use is Tapae on the east and the large hospitals on the west side.

I have love-hate feelings about TV. Lots of good info to be sure but you've got to separate that from all the jingoistic farang BS (I guess here too but this ma peeps) who think the world srill revolves around them - that place is infested with idiots.

It always puzzles me why so many farangs hate and ridicule Thailand but yet still continue to live there.

I'll like to live in Chiangmai one day, like it more than Bangkok. But then their summer is unbearable.

Yes summer in CM is a killer. My family told me that they had to carry umbrella when they were there early this year.

I was fortunate when I was there when haze peaked here in Singapore. Doi Inthanon recorded 11 degree celcius when I was at the peak.

Thinking of doing some hiking down from Doi Inthanon when I am there next time. Any advice? They have a few trails.

Ja, try looking at this. Depends on what you looking for. Peak high season Dec year end, best to avoid Xmas hols stretch, fares and accommodation UP. Also crowds at touristy places, was caught in bad traffic up Doi Ithanon (highest mountain north)

No idea. But a bro here said that CM became popular with PRCs after a movie was produced there. Anyway CM is nearest to PRC.
Few years ago there was a brawl between PRC and Thais. PRC behaved so badly that Thais who are calm natured people also could
not tolerate them resulting in a big fight. It was in Pattaya or some beach resort in other part of Thailand.

Had a porridge breakfast this morning in a coffee-shop setting next to a wet market in north Jakarta.

Wanna share with you guys the living standard here by showing you the price of my breakfast. It seemed that Jakarta is far more expensive compare to Bangkok and very close to Singapore. Remember, this is a normal coffee-shop that look like this:

The porridge with egg IDR 21,000 (S$2.60)

Kopi-O small is IDR 7,000 (S$0.86) - funny things is all hot beverages comes with a cover. I have to say its really hot because they heated the cups and saucer before

Two Eggs IDR 8,000 (S$1) - cute way of serving

Also had a a u-char-kuay that costs IDR 4,000 or about 50 cents

So as you can see, its not cheap living in Indonesia despite the fact that there are so many poor people, meaning the gap is really wide.

Of course for the normal people in the streets eating their Indon food cost a lot less for example their typical breakfast is nasi uduk (nasi lemak) that cost only IDR 5,000 (65 cents) this include - the coconut rice + noodle + sambal + tempeh + tahu that's it but the portion is big so its filling. For them food cost per day is IDR 20,000 (S$2.50) max for all 3 meals.

btw many china ppl? How are these northern Thais like ?
Ja, true to your interest in sino demographics.

Total population 1.5mil in Chiangmai province, 170k in city main (vs mind boggling 9mil in Bkk). 80% "local", and interestingly enough lived under Burmese centuries ago after 2 wars (Lanna before Chakri era). And you have hill tribes.

You have the Yunnan overflow Chinese too. From what little I know, many up in mountains like Doi Wawee (nearer to Chiangrai).

And here's interesting piece on how the movie "Lost in Thailand" put Chiangmai on the map for China visitors. With inward looking at how thais perceive China visitors behaviour
