Twenty-nine provinces across Thailand have not reported any Covid-19 cases in the past 14 days while nearly one-third of the new cases were found in Bangkok, Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman of the government's Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said on Saturday (April 18).

“Those 11 persons [out of 33 new cases] were found to have been in contact with former cases,” he said.
Of the other 22 new patients, two have returned from foreign countries, one had contact with a foreign returnee, two had been to places of public gathering, four had high-risk careers and lived in high-risk areas, one is a medical personnel, 10 were waiting to be investigated for medical history, and two were in quarantine.

In addition, he revealed that no new patient has been found in 29 provinces in the past 14 days. They were Chiang Rai, Phetchaburi, Phetchaboon, Phrae, Mae Hong Son, Kanchanaburi, Kalasin, Chanthaburi, Nakhon Nayok, Buriram, Mahasarakham, Mukdahan, Yasothon, Roi Et, Ratchaburi, Lopburi, Lampoon, Si Sa Ket, Samut Songkhram, Saraburi, Sukhothai, Nong Khai, Nong Bua Lamphu, Amnat Charoen, Udon Thani, Uttaradit, Uthai Thani, Rayong and Tak

Meanwhile, there are no cases in Kamphaeng Phet, Chai Nat, Trat, Nan, Bueng Kan, Phichit, Ranong, Sing Buri and Ang Thong provinces.
“The new patients found in Bangkok and Nonthaburi were more than the total found in other provinces in the country,” the spokesperson said.
"The total patients in Bangkok were 1,401 and 150 in Nonthaburi."

According to information, most of the deceased had diabetes, high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol.
The spokesman explained that the diabetes could destroy human organs and the immune system. An unhealthy body has lower capacity to deal with Covid-19 or to heal itself.
The spokesperson added that concerned officials have run an operation to find infected persons with no suspected symptoms amongst former cases.

32 more Covid-19 cases point to situation stabilising in Thailand (Updated)

Thailand’s total number of Covid-19 patients rose to 2,765 with 32 new cases confirmed over a 24-hour period, and no deaths, Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman of the government's Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said on Sunday (April 19).

After a second successive day without deaths, the number of fatalities remains at 47, while 1,928 patients have recovered and returned to their homes and 790 are undergoing treatment in hospitals.

Sunday's new cases offered more proof that the Covid-19 curve in Thailand might be flattening.

On April 9 there were 54 new cases, 50 on April 10, 45 on April 11, 33 on April 12, 28 on April 13, 34 on April 14, 30 on April 15, 29 on April 16 ,28 on April 17, and 33 on April 18.

Taweensin said data showed people in the 20-29 age group to be at high risk for infection as they account for one-fourth of the total cases.

He praised Thai people for their cooperation with the government to help flatten the curve, as the number of provinces without new cases has increased. However, the number of confirmed cases in Bangkok and Nonthaburi has started to increase.

The cases can be divided into four groups.

The first group of 18 had close contacts with others previously confirmed as infected (14 in Bangkok).

The second group comprised five people of whom three had worked in crowded areas or close to foreigners, and two went to crowded areas.

The third group of five was under investigation to find the source of the virus.

The last group of four are under state quarantine; one had returned from Indonesia, one from the US, and two from UK.

Meanwhile, 141 people have fully recovered and returned home.

Taweesin urged all recovered people to donate plasma to help improve immunity of current patients, as less than a 100 has been donated so far.

As of April 19, the total number of confirmed cases in the country stood at 2765 -- 790 are under treatment, 1928 have recovered and been discharged, and there have been 47 deaths.

Globally, there are more than 2.3 million confirmed cases and around 160,000 deaths.

Deserted Thai beaches lure rare turtles to build most nests in 20 years

BANGKOK (REUTERS) - Thailand has found the largest number of nests of rare leatherback sea turtles in two decades on beaches bereft of tourists because of the coronavirus pandemic, environmentalists say.

From wild boars patrolling the Israeli city of Haifa to deer venturing into London suburbs, virus closures are drawing wildlife into the abandoned streets of many cities.

In Thailand, with 2,765 infections and 47 deaths, travel curbs ranging from a ban on international flights to an appeal to citizens to stay home have brought a collapse in tourist numbers, but freed up the beaches for wildlife.

The 11 turtle nests authorities have found since last November were the highest number in 20 years, said Kongkiat Kittiwatanawong, the director of the Phuket Marine Biological Center.

"This is a very good sign for us because many areas for spawning have been destroyed by humans," he told Reuters. No such nests had been found for the previous five years.

"If we compare to the year before, we didn't have this many spawn, because turtles have a high risk of getting killed by fishing gear and humans disturbing the beach."

Leatherbacks are the world's largest sea turtles. They are considered endangered in Thailand, and listed as a vulnerable species globally by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

They lay their eggs in dark and quiet areas, scarce when tourists thronged the beaches. People have also been known to dig into their nests and steal eggs.

Late in March, staff at a national park in the southern province of Phanga Nga bordering the Andaman Sea found 84 hatchlings after monitoring eggs for two months.

The first coronavirus test kits made in Thailand are on their way to laboratories around the country after being delivered to Government House on Thursday (April 16). Developed by Siam Bioscience and the Department of Medical Science, the RT-PCR virus test kits meet World Health Organisation standards and will go straight into battle against the nationwide pandemic.

Siam Bioscience International was established in 2009 under the guidance of His Majesty King Rama IX the Great to improve the health of Thais. After the Covd-19 outbreak, the company decided to adapt parts of its factory for the urgent production of RT-PCR kits.

It has now delivered the first shipment of 20,000 test kits, out of a total 100,000, to send to medical laboratories across the country for speedier detection of the virus so that patients can be quarantined to reduce the spread of infection.

"The production of this virus test kit embodies our aim of ensuring good health for Thais and answering the nation’s needs through the dedication and collaboration of our staff, including executives, researchers, and work teams,” said Nualphan Lamsam, Siam Bioscience’s corporate communications director.

“We are proud to add a spark of hope in efforts to control this epidemic.”

If these kits are for real, then Philip Yeo's A-Star need to shut down for good.

What are these scholars tied down for besides bond. ?
