A Nation Cheated selling fast
Sunday, 28 September 2008
Singapore Democrats

Dr Chee Soon Juan's latest book A Nation Cheated is selling fast even though a few bookstore chains refuse to distribute it.

Borders, an American company, had previously indicated that it didn't want to sell the book because of “cultural sensitivities” whereas Times, a Government owned book chain, the MPH and Popular bookstores have not responded to enquiries about distribution.

Only Kinokuniya and Select Books, a small retail outlet at Tanglin Shopping Centre, are carrying the book. And sales have been brisk. Two weeks into the first order, Kinokuniya has already made a second order.

So if you haven't already bought a copy, get one today. Alternatively you can write to [email protected]his e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to order a copy.

We highlight here an excerpt from the book about Singapore being a money-laundering hub of which organisations like the Transparency International is taking note and the Tax Justice Network is scrutinisng.

Former chief economist at Morgan Stanley, Andy Xie, gave a little more insight into another method of how Singapore creates wealth. Xie had written an email to his colleagues that Singapore was not the success story that everyone thinks it is, calling the city-state an economic failure dependent on illicit money from Indonesia and China, "Actually, Singapore's success came mostly from being the money laundering center for corrupt Indonesian businessmen and government officials.''

The 46 year-old economist born in Shanghai, with a PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, made the observation after attending the International Monetary Fund and World Bank annual meetings which was held in Singapore in September 2006. Xie added that "To sustain its economy, Singapore is building casinos to attract corruption money from China." Morgan Stanley very quickly relieved Xie of his position which he had held for nine years.

Financial analyst and Singapore observer, Michael Backman, whom Goh Chok Tong once lauded as "an expert in overseas Chinese" in his 1998 National Day Rally speech, added that "Singapore is working hard at making itself more attractive to Chinese mainlanders, be they tourists or individuals, with funds to park…Casinos are being set up. There has even been an influx of mainland Chinese prostitutes into Singapore's quasilegal sex industry."

These funds, according to observers that Backman cites, are not always clean. One goes to the extent of saying, "Singapore has truly become the global centre for parking ill-gotten gains. The private banking teams are huge and in practice ask almost no questions."

Another interviewee said that an acquaintance who made US$13 million from deals in Indonesia was not enquired as to how the money was obtained despite obviously working in a job that would not have allowed such amounts to have been earned.

"Russians, mainland Chinese and Indonesians are pouring money into Singapore. High-end property has risen 30-50 percent in the last 18 months or so," another says. Singaporean officials make all the right noises when it comes to monitoring illicit funds. Through all this the Singapore Government remains largely uncooperative when it comes to meeting international expectations and obligations on money laundering.

In 2006, Merrill Lynch and Capgemini reported that the number of "super-rich" Indonesians living in Singapore is a staggering 18,000 (out of 55,000) whose wealth amounts to approximately US$87 billion. Much of this wealth, complains the Indonesian Government, has come from illegal activities in Indonesia.

Indonesia has repeatedly proposed the signing of a memorandum of understanding about cooperation with Singapore in handling money laundering. The effort went unrequited until 2006. Whatever information that the Indonesians needed to pursue the financial suspects had to be solicited from the US.

Why should this be so in a country with a government that's supposed to be whiter than white, non corruptible, with no atmosphere of fear and threats.
Cultural sensitivities? I take my head off to the guy who came out with that.
So what does great admirers of LKY have to say?

That is only on the surface. You scratch it, the ugly truth can be seen clearly. It's all a facade.

But the total control of the mainstream media with a former deputy prime minister heading it and ISD staffers as scribes for the PAP authoritarian regime is cracking with the advent of the new Internet media.

Dear Locky

Something along the lines of " who cares if it is " dirty clean muddy money as long as money comes to Singapore. " There is something to be said about the swiss with a free press and a liberal democracy. They were for a large part of their economic and political history famous and are still famous for swiss banking secrecy. Both government and opposition knew which side of their economic bread the banking butter was spread on. I do wish the same situation was true in Singapore.

That said much is good is about his book and the points it raises especially with regards to the issues of rights democracy and income divide. I disagree with their proposed policy solutions. I strongly disagree that just because the PAP says it is clean decent and not corrupt, there is an attempt to paint the PAP black with its blind eye to dirty money or illegal money is the right thing to do for the economy. Rationally speaking if the SDP came to power they should be singing the same tune with regards to illegal money that the PAP is singing and if they do not I fear for singapore and how ideology and faith triumphs over brutal economic realities.

Dear Locke,

As usual you are singing the tune of the PAP. Why don't you leave WP then and join PAP since you are so deeply in love with them ?

Oops....I forgot WP is a subsidiary of the PAP for LOSERS like you who don't qualify for the main branch and relegated to ball-carriers in cyberspace.

Still, they should be paying you quite well for you to neglect your Holland Drive shop.

LOL !!

Dear Avantas

Hmmm abuse from you is to be expected as you can't argue or discuss any better. What I do really is besides the point and it is a forlorn hope but do stick to the issues at hand. And as to putting words or mischaracterizing descriptions :_)) Suffice it to say that people who have been caught verbatim describing policeman as "ugly" and then saying that my description of their words as "intimidating" is incorrect and putting words in their mouth says it all about the people in question. When pressed as to what would describe "ugly policemen" say "friendly ugly policemen." I was left with a typical answer derived from a two key keyboard.

I am saying that on some basic issues especially ones related to the economy certain things are bigger then the PAP or SDP or WP. The need for a strong banking or international finance centre as a lynch pin of the economy is I feel one of those issues. My view simply is that just because the PAP says the world is round, I have to argue the contrary position that the earth world is flat. "_))). Take each issue and examine it on its own merits

Dear Locke,

Obviously when it comes to twisting and turning and putting words in others' mouth, I can't be compared to you.

Who is the one who announced to the world that SDP thinks Chia Ti Lik is a PAP mole only to be debunked and shamed by SDP supporters later ?

As a developed first world country, Singapore has to abide by international laws.

Are you saying that without those ill-gotten money from corrupted Indonesian businessmen being parked in local banks, our economy will collapse ?

Dear Avantas

Let's just say that things I have heard might not be right all the time. But then again I make no claims to be perfect or for that matter to be right in everything that I do or say just that I do try might best. Suffice it to say that people who have been caught verbatim describing policeman as "ugly" and then saying that my description of their words as "intimidating" is incorrect and putting words in their mouth says it all about the people in question. When pressed as to what would describe "ugly policemen" say "friendly ugly policemen." I was left with a typical answer derived from a two key keyboard.

Avantas , tell that to the Swiss or to Hong Kong or to Luxemborg or to the British Virgin Islands, or to Panama etc etc etc . What I am saying is that the banking and financial sector is a crucial part of Singapore's economy base and that banking secrecy and the need not to ask to many questions about the origins of that money is paramount. How much of it is from Indonesia , from China , from Mars and timbuctoo is not really clear and that as always should be the case because that is the whole point about being a discreet centre for wealth management. Take a look at Swiss and its approach to financial secrecy in the past.

More orders for A Nation Cheated

A%20Nation%20Cheated.jpg

Barely two weeks after it placed the second order for A Nation Cheated, Kinokuniya Bookstore has ordered more copies of the book. Written by Dr Chee Soon Juan, the book is selling briskly and is obviously in demand. Select Books, a small bookshop at the Tanglin Shopping Centre, is also selling it.

The first part of the book delves into how Mr Lee Kuan Yew really came to power.

Singaporeans have been repeatedly told that Mr Lee had defeated the communists in a life-and-death struggle to control Singapore.

Declassified documents in London, however, show that things may not have been quite so heroic. The information that has surfaced reveals that there was much behind-the-scenes machination between Mr Lee and the British.

Mr Lim and his allies were repeatedly arrested by the colonial government which paved the way for Mr Lee and his faction to come to power.

Records indicate that in reality the British did not consider the late Lim Chin Siong a communist and officials stated repeatedly that his fight for power was well within constitutional means.

It was, in fact, Mr Lee Kuan Yew who insisted that Mr Lim be detained without trial. At the same time, however, he did not want to be seen openly calling for his comrade's arrest for fear of a political backlash as the charismatic Lim was hugely popular with Singaporeans.

And so Mr Lee schemed to get the British to front the crackdown. Mr Lim together with more than a hundred others were detained under the ISA in 1963. He was subjected to cruel and humiliating treatment by Mr Lee's Internal Security Department. Mr Lim subsequently suffered from depression in prison and tried to commit suicide.

Historians and commentators have repeatedly stated that while Mr Lim Chin Siong was much loved and supported by Singaporeans, his nemesis Mr Lee was the one that London wanted to see become prime minister.

Several years into the detention, Prime Minister Lee insisted that his erstwhile party colleague be exiled to the UK. Mr Lim was allowed to return to Singapore only in 1979. He died in 1996 of a heart attack.

Apart from historical developments, A Nation Cheated also documents how Singaporeans have been deprived of the economic security that has been promised to them even as their political rights have been denied them.

This book is a must-read for those who want to peel the scales off their eyes and read about the side of Singapore that the Government won't reveal. The myths that have been woven about the PAP is exposed and Singaporeans desperately need to acquaint themselves with the truth.

A Nation Cheated can also be purchased by sending your email to [email protected]
