Instead of making excuses, putting blame, finding fault or saying things like "Oh, I was affected too, I'm now asking so and so agency to investigate", the government had better put in place a disaster recovery plan to deal with severe flooding.

So far, we have been lucky in the sense that it has only been property, vehicles and goods which have been affected. Losses no doubt, money down the drain, but at least no lives have been lost. I just hope that those supertalented overpaid indispensable superstars realize that in cases of severe flooding, vehicles and people can be submerged in water, trapped or even swept away by severe flooding. They should quickly put in place a plan that involves the civil defence, police, army, and perhaps even the air force and navy, to ensure that anyone trapped in the floods and are in danger of losing their lives, can be rescued promptly.

The good thing is that natural disasters like floods don't differentiate among economic classes. Just as a person can be trapped in a bus in a severe flood, a person can also be trapped in a luxury car. This, if anything, could be the impetus for them to get their asses moving on such a plan. They and their families can avoid the crowds of "foreign talent" thronging the streets, but they may not be able to avoid widespread severe flooding.

As they say, perhaps the heaven really has eyes.

Good post, actually i believe they have planned extensively for everything else but doesn't seemed to have catered much for flooding.

My relatives visited today, all were complaining of flooding in SG. Then they asked me about flooding here, i didn't really encountered any thank goodness.

Actually i lost faith in karma, it just doesn't happen. I have seen so many cases of people being evil and gets a very good ending or still alive and a lot of good and kind people just gone in their prime. Maybe its from their past lives but who knows.

Take for example, one young chap, aged 27, i helped him as much as i could, introduced friends to buy stuff, properties from him, used his contractors, lawyers and bankers even though i knew he would get comms. I went ahead thinking its ok to do all this for a friend and we even bought him presents, etc and celebrated each others birthday. I even thought to myself, well sometimes you can still find true friendship even after the age of 30. I was wrong.

In the end, for a super paltry $780 RM he betrayed my friendship and played me out. I guess he didn't know the red packet from me and my wife for his wedding and his housewarming and his wife's birthday would be worth much more than that. All the things he promised me he would follow up but never did.

The contractor he said was his childhood friend and insisted we used turned out to be really really bad, shockingly bad and he himself later said this guy was bad and then said oh he just actually got to know him. Sigh.

He left the company without even letting myself or his close friends know the new one. In the end when i found out, i still continue to introduce friends to him thinking its because he was afraid of his toxic ex colleagues but well after selling to us, he kind of disappeared, every call to him, he is ALWAYS BUSY day and night, evenings and weekends even though i try to only call him during or after lunch time, my calls don't even get answered but we have seen him at some of the neighbours place selling them something. My wife was especially disgusted as i had dismissed her concerns about this person.

Now, i am starting to doubt the stories he was telling us about the "toxic" ex colleagues.

Its actually not the money, i don't care two hoots about it. Its the fact that you really tried and put your heart and soul into a friendship that is sad.

Another guy, i helped him siam a lot of things including some stupid stuff and liabilities, i also helped him find a job and get somewhere but in the end, he only called me when he needed help with IT, career or money. He even told me, bro, you are too successful. What kind of crap is that especially from a friend you know for more than 10 years? I am kind of disappointed sometimes but i guess thats how it goes.

I feel so sorry for you man when I read your accounts about how your friends mistreated you.

Aiyah, I'm not helping girls... but you should listen to your wife. A woman who loves you and cares for you will give you good advice. Especially wife. She's already married to you, of course she has your best interests at heart. :) If she has mis-givings, you should at least hear it out.

Take heart. At least you've got a wifey who loves you. :) You can tell how much a wife loves you by how much she puts in for your kids and you.

Wah what happened to your inbox. It's full.

Have you ever thought that this was what he wanted in the first place? He doesn't want your red packet and he's the bian tai kind who just wanted to do that to you? Consider that.

Don't always think in monetary terms. There are loonies out there.

Bro Wuqi
I have learnt that we shouldn't expect too much from people, because a lot of the time, they will disappoint you. If we expect little or nothing from them, sometimes we will be pleasantly surprised.
Another thing is to have very strict criteria for friends, even acquaintances.
I know some people who don't give a damn about our well being when we are in contact with them or when they know what's happening with us. After we lose contact for a few years or they have lost touch, they immediately want to know everything.
For people like these, my conclusion is that they are simply kaypoh or want some gossip fodder for high tea conversation. If they try to contact me and introduce themselves after a long absence, I'll usually reply "Who?" and hang up.

Have very strict criteria for friends, otherwise you will end up mixing around with a lot of hangerons, kaypohs and opportunists.

First death as a result of the heavy rainfall and floods.
Looks like they had better examine the trees as part of the plan and also have an alert system during heavy rainfall and floods.

Driver killed when tree falls during heavy downpour
By Sona Remesh | Posted: 20 July 2010 1548 hrs

SINGAPORE:
Strong winds and heavy rains Tuesday afternoon claimed the life of one driver.

A 32-year old man was killed when a tree fell and crushed the car he was in, at the junction of Thomson Hills Drive and Yio Chu Kang Road.

The tree was uprooted at the base, dragging along some parts of the drain by the roadside.

The tree was removed at around 4.45pm.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said the car was badly damaged.

Rescuers took about 20 minutes to remove the victim's body with hydraulic spreader-cutters. The driver had suffered injuries to his spine.

Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene. No one else was in the car

An NParks spokesperson said there were strong winds at the time of the accident.

According to NParks, the wind at the time of the accident today was as high as 65km/h.

The National Parks Board also added it will be inspecting other trees in the area - a move welcomed by residents.

One resident, businessman S L Chua, said: "It's sad (that) this incident has killed someone, I hope they have more stringent inspections and they look at the whole canopy of the tree. Because the canopy is so heavy, if its slanting to one side, sooner or later the whole tree will come down, especially with the strong and heavy winds nowadays."

CEO of NParks, Mr Ng Lang said the 35-40 year old raintree was last pruned in January, as part of routine pruning to reduce the weight of the crown.

He added that the tree was likely uprooted due to a weather phenomenon known as a microburst.

This is a localised, powerful descending air draft column that produces damaging winds at high speed, and is known to knock down fully grown trees.

"NParks is deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident. Our priority now is to extend assistance to the family of the deceased," he said.

In a separate incident, another tree fell at nearby Tagore Lane.

Police had to cordon off the section of Upper Thomson Road, after its junction with Yio Chu Kang Road.

No injuries were recorded.

Tuesday's incidents come after National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan said some 240 trees fell in June alone.

This is about 170 per cent higher compared to the same month last year, due largely to the adverse weather.

Mr Mah said this in a written reply to a query by MP Baey Yam Keng on Monday, July 19.

This recent bad weather is causing floods not only in singapore but also many countries as well. What was shocking was after the 1st incident, there was no warning signal to warn others of heavy rainfall that could cause floods.

Like some countries can have typhoon warnings, tsunami warnings, what kind of actions are the authorities taking or planning to undertake? nothing.

If the same situation happens again the next 2 days, no one is prepared. It shows that we are not prepared for such situations at all.

To put it simply, PUB and the govt have no answer.

施恩莫望报!always help with what you can afford to loss and not expect the other party to repay your kindness in term of favor, monetarily or emotionally!

anyway this thread is about flooding. thanks! :D

ever hear before?

the mills of God works in timing not known to us....

slowly but surely, someone has to pay these debts when they meet their maker.

I was cheated nearly SGD$200'000 by a guy whom I call brother when we went into joint-venture business. But later heard his leg was broken by people in JB. Well, what did I say?
