SINGAPORE : Police have arrested six men and three women, aged between 37 and 69 years, for their suspected involvement in running an illegal gambling syndicate.
They are believed to have been collecting illegal 4D bets as well as bets on horse races.
In an eight-hour operation, led by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Police Intelligence Department on June 5, all nine suspects were arrested during simultaneous raids conducted at public housing estates and condominiums at Bukit Panjang, Bukit Batok, Yung Sheng Road, Jurong West and Hong San Walk, off Choa Chu Kang Avenue 1.
Cash amounting to about S$5,300, eight mobile phones, two computers, notebooks and pieces of paper with entries believed to be related to illegal betting were seized.
The value of the bets collected by the syndicate is estimated at about S$138,000.
Three men and one woman will be charged in court on Wednesday, while investigations into the other cases are on-going.
Assistant director of CID's Specialised Crime Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Goh Lam Kiong, said the division will take prompt enforcement action to curb such activities.
Anyone who bets with an illegal bookmaker can be fined up to S$5,000, jailed up to six months, or both.
Anyone involved in bookmaking can be fined between S$20,000 and S$200,000, and jailed up to five years.
