Police arrested eight PRC nationals last Thursday on the suspicion that they were involved in criminal activity.
The eight, all aged between 31 and 49, were loitering around the Jewellery expo on July 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] at Marina Bay Sands Convention hall.
They had been standing in one big group and acting suspiciously.
When police approached them, they found several small plastic sachets with small white stones in them.
It is suspected that the men were going to use the stones to replace jewellery after distracting shop staff so that they could walk away with the real items.
Investigations into their scheme followed their arrest and all eight were sent back to China on July 8.
Following the incident, Police have advised retailers of valuable items such as jewellery to be extra vigilant.
They warned that scammers often approach in groups or pairs and try and distract attendants when viewing jewellery.
Shopkeepers are reminded to always keep the jewellery in sight when customers are handling it and to be aware of distraction tactics.
For valuable items, retailers are encouraged to have more than 1 attendant watching and to set up CCTV camera in strategic locations.
