77-year-old man arrested for snatch theft

SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 77-year-old man for having snatched away a gold necklace from a woman walking at the void deck of Block 166 Gangsa Road.
At about 8.35am on April 21, he came up behind the victim and snatched away the necklace before fleeing. The victim's shouts for help caught the attention of two members of the public who were nearby.
They managed to note the suspect's appearance and the direction in which he fled.
Based on information provided, the police conducted an immediate follow-up and swiftly established the identity of the suspect. He was subsequently arrested in the vicinity of Gangsa road on the same day at about 1.10 pm.
The suspect will be charged in Court on April 23 for the offence of snatch theft and if convicted, he faces a maximum jail term of seven years and will also be liable to caning.
The police commended the members of public for their alertness and said the arrest is a testament of the strong partnership between the community and the police in fighting crime together.
