Do more to deter errant caterers

ONCE again, a school caterer has erred as more than 300 children from Pat's Schoolhouse as well as seven teachers fell ill after eating food prepared by Mum's Kitchen Catering ('Pat's Schoolhouse pupils, staff hit by food poisoning'; last Friday).
The joint statement issued by the National Environment Agency (NEA) and Ministry of Health (MOH) said that the same caterer was fined for lapses in a food poisoning incident last December. However, it made no mention of the quantum of the fine imposed or the corrective steps taken.
Eight of the school's 14 centres have been hit by food poisoning in the latest episode.
Obviously, the caterer is not the least perturbed by the NEA and ministry's deterrence. An observer is justifiably perplexed as to whether this is the best the NEA and MOH can do under the circumstances.
The NEA, together with MOH, should strive for a risk-free environment in all eateries.

Food poisoning worries

I AM deeply concerned by last Friday's report ("Pat's Schoolhouse pupils, staff hit by food poisoning"). More so, when the children affected are aged two to six.
I have been affected by food poisoning before and it is not a good feeling. I cannot imagine the discomfort faced by these young children.
Schools must ensure they award their catering contracts to food suppliers based on their good records, and not necessarily based on the lowest tenders. They have a responsibility towards families that have entrusted their young children to their care.

SINGAPORE: A third preschool served by Mum's Kitchen Catering has been hit by food poisoning.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) said it was notified on Monday of another food poisoning incident involving eight children from the Learning Vision's Raffles Place branch at Cecil Street.

Together with the cases at Pat's Schoolhouse and the Children's Place at Kay Siang Road, a total of 235 children and 12 teachers have been affected.

MOH said 34 people were hospitalised, and 14 have since been discharged.

Mum's Kitchen Catering has had its operating licence suspended since last Thursday.

MOH said investigations are ongoing.
