54-year-old cabbie accused of over-charging

Taxi drivers are the scum of the earth the world over. Why should Singapore be any different?

There's nothing wrong with media reporting in this case. Taxi drivers are supposed to collect metered fares plus whatever authorised surcharges, if any. Presetting or bargaining fare is not in the rules of business conduct. Whatever grievances a cabbie has with the cab company, resolve it with the company, not the passenger.

Without such agreement, which driver will want to driver Limousine cab with daily rental of $120 over dollars? Besides, there are special request from other passengers which require to take them from Point A to Point B at a certain timing. Also, because some passengers are familiar and comfortable with certain drivers, and they are willing to fork out more to pay for their service.Like that also cannot!

54-year-old cabbie accused of over-charging
By Leong Wee Keat, TODAY | Posted: 26 February 2010 0850 hrs

SINGAPORE: Where most taxi drivers would compound the offence and readily pay a fine, a limousine cabbie accused of over-charging his customer is instead claiming trial to his charges in the Subordinate Courts.

Mr Lee Ngiap Han, 54, is charged by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) with obtaining a S$20 fare from a passenger last September, which would have otherwise cost S$9.40.

But Mr Lee, a taxi driver for more than 10 years, is contesting the charge as he claimed to have entered into an agreement with the pick-up location on the price.

MediaCorp understands that he may not be alone, as a number of drivers have also entered into an agreement with the hotel in Marine Parade.

Such private agreements are not unheard of in the industry, but the Courts will now have to rule on whether such agreements are in contravention of the Road Traffic Rules, and an offence under the Road Traffic Act.

Mr Lee, who drives a Comfort Mercedes, is said to have charged S$11.60 more during the trip from Marine Parade to Changi Airport.

Besides the over-charging charge, Mr Lee also faces a charge of failing to set the meter in motion during the same trip on September 5.

Mr Lee, defence lawyer Tan Hee Joek and the LTA attended a pre-trial conference on Thursday.

The trial is scheduled to be heard next Friday. If convicted, Mr Lee could be jailed up to three months or fined S$1,000.

If convicted on both charges, he could also risk losing his vocational licence.

friend,I can tell you drivers have no say with their company. We are like their mechanical cows making money for them. For the past year, I was given a bottle of Vitamin C as token of appreciation. Then, I realised that the vitamin C is for swallowed not sucked. It seems the cb compoany took this shiopment of cheaper vitamins and give them to us. What I want to say is that this taxi company always think that the drivers are not very well educated and easily taken advantage in the name of the law.

If hotel make a booking on the price them bring the hotel management to court.
Sure the taxi driver will lost in court because that is what meter for. If not next time these case will be all over headline.
Will bring back taxi service before regulated just like people called " ba wan che' or illegal taxi.

I can understand cabbies' professional fustration and grievances. Still not a reason for pirating, touting, fare fixing and overcharching. It's not the passenger's fault or liability. The passenger shouldn't be collateral victim.

If the passenger is willing, I dun find anything wrong with it. In the case mentioned above, there was already this pre-agreement.

I'm sorry to use this analogy but no personal offence whatsoever intended.

The family of a kidnapped person may also "willingly" pay the ransom.

Someone who willingly overpay not knowing the fair price will regret and become angry to learn it later.

Got balls go protest. Dun talk so Much.

I can't find exact words to use but I think you can't compare kidnapping with taxi driving.

Taxi drivers always gets scraps left over by the Taxi companies...they get all the fat meat....

got taxi drivers drive all day, never had enough passengers to pay for the taxi rental and petrol....

taxi company always win without working their asses off...read Cai Mingjie's blog...

Alot of taxi drivers easily ear $3-5k per month. I always hear cab drivers boasting of this. In this case, everyone shud be cab drivers - the only profession where foreign trash cannot apply for.
