He got a diploma plus a degree from some unknown Aussie university. He was far more knowledgeable than the RSM

In SAF, there is no bright career path for non-officers. Your buddy should have asked to be an officer. Retiring as a LTC is still better than the top tier warrant officer rank.

He did retire after achieving 1WO. Rumour for him was that they didnt want to have a MWO/SWO/CWO with a degree. He was in fact smarter (beyond education wise) than most of the officers he served under

Good for him. Sadly, in public service, it is that piece of paper that matters. That's why we have so many paper generals.

Sounds like the story of many a bright and capable (but frustrated) civil servant who lacked that 1st class honours carte blanche which enables the holder to sweep up all great credit for work never done by him/her ....either that or you ar just another princeling who will have a smoothened path for you to glide all the way to the top.......
