SINGAPORE - They loved fast cars and luxury watches, living flashy lifestyles and were the envy of many on social media.
But the five men killed in the Tanjong Pagar crash also believed in helping the less fortunate.
Mr Jonathan Long, 29, was the driver of the white BMW M4 coupe that crashed into a shophouse last Saturday (Feb 13) morning, the second day of Chinese New Year.
He was killed along with four others in the car - Mr Eugene Yap, 29, Mr Elvin Tan Yong Hao, 28, Mr Wilson Teo Qi Xiang, 26, and Mr Gary Wong Hong Chieh, 29.
Mr Long's girlfriend, Ms Raybe Oh Siew Huey, 26, is still in critical condition in the hospital, having suffered severe burns while trying to save her boyfriend and the others.
Speaking to The Straits Times, Mr Ethan Keng, 28, a friend of the group, revealed that just hours before the accident, some of them were out packing and distributing food to the elderly.

He said Mr Long, Ms Oh and Mr Tan were volunteering with charity organisation Hopes in Meals on the first day of Chinese New Year (Feb 12) last Friday, helping to give out meals to low-income seniors living in rental flats at York Hill Estate in Tiong Bahru.
“They were charitable people, taking time out at least two to three times a year to help the elderly,” said Mr Keng, an insurance agent.
“Over the past few days, many people have been saying nasty things about them, but they don’t know what they were really like.”
A spokesman for Hopes in Meals said: "They were very helpful and nice as volunteers... Ms Raybe Oh also helped us to pack goodie bags (for the elderly)."
Mr Keng said the group grew close in the past two years or so.
“They were all self-made, and never took money from friends or family to buy the things they wanted. They didn’t cheat or scam and were nice people who cared deeply for those around them.”
He added that he was closest to Mr Tan, having known him for about seven years.
Mr Keng described him as a “people person” who personally delivered CNY cards and goodies to each of his hundred or so clients this year.

Son couldn't drive and wasn't a fan of fast cars, says dad of Tanjong Pagar crash victim

“Elvin is an amazing brother, and there were times I would call him at 2am because I needed someone (to talk to) and he’ll come meet me,” he said.
“But he was also the kind of guy who was always late for everything.”
Mr Tan was in the midst of finalising his promotion to manager this year, and had been recruiting for his own team.
He drove a Mercedes-Benz c180 and was contemplating buying a BMW M4 himself.
Mr Keng believes that his friend was in the car that fateful morning as he wanted to experience what it was like in a BMW M4 before buying one himself.
“Elvin was still thinking about buying an M4 but felt like he would be splurging if he bought it,” he said.
“He also recently bought an Audemars Piguet watch but spent months thinking about it before buying.”
Commenting on the remarks and speculation on social media, Mr Keng acknowledged that the crash could have been avoided, but urged members of the public to empathise with family members of the five dead and avoid making hurtful comments.
“Whatever they did, you know, I agree it’s a stupid accident,” he said. “But they have paid for it with their lives. For all the speculation, the fact is they’ve paid the ultimate price for it.”
He said he would miss his friend dearly.
“Rest well Elvin, catch up with you when I see you,” he said with tears in his eyes. “This time I’m the one who’s late.”

I see a burning fireball running to the shop opposite... burned for almost a minute no one helper her

Which charity is open early morning before sunrise? I want to know.

Sadly she did not understand the concept of rolling on the floor to put out fire

All the friends are talking cock..... the fucking bastard driver could have killed someone from the way he was driving. It was a stroke of good luck that he died instead of killing innocent passerbys. Too bad he dragged his other friends along.

Clearly there must be a mistake in this article, did I read wrongly? is it supposed to be two to three times a month?

That lanjiao guy stomping feet should bury his head in the ground forever. Least he could have done is to hold back the girl running towards the fireball. Even when the girl was a burning fireball he was nowhere to be seen.

Easy come easy go. No fixed schedule or frequency for such things.

My hunch is that this is nothing more than a PR statement, with Aviva pulling strings from behind the scenes. Corporate image lah, can't let it be sullied by these ah bengs.

Sad. Looks like the insurance payout will go to the burns treatment for the non-subsidised malaysian patient.

If it drags on long enough, inevitably the debate about euthanasia might surface. Stay tuned.

That Guy lead the Girl forward...

Blood forever on his Hands ...

Not his girlfriend or family member, why care so much? :sneaky:

Yes. It's obvious from what people are bitching about. Young 20 something year old driving sports coupe, had chiobu girlfriend, own businesses.. can just smell the vinegar

Five dead young men didn't do anything to you and the thousands of anonymous posters. Maybe you can stop sending off negative energy into the universe.
can sympathize, understand, and feel the pain. all i see were 5 young sinkies full of debt albeit with “promising” but challenging (and disruptive/ destructive) lives ahead of them. their lives would have been as miserable as some of the young sinkies in my distant family. they are lucky to have parents to pay for their overseas uni education. instead of repaying their parents (with gratitude and part of their incum) they get into more debt by buying flashy cars, frequent vacation trips, sexpensive weddings, bto hdb flats. the most elitist among them who works for a (sunken) sinkie sovereign fund die die must buy condo in bukit timah area then orchard road area. rented out one but rent lower than mortgage payment. advised him to settle for 2nd hand bmw or lexus suv since he has growing family but die die must buy brand new porsche suv as he wants to keep up with me and my doc brother who also owns a porsche suv (both of us at least have paid off all debts and are financially independent; he’s deep in debt). those other materialistic, elitist wannabe nephews and nieces in heavy debt luckily have jobs from family biz, and their parents are paying them high incums to support their chobolan lifestyles. if family biz closes down or gets sold off, these chobolan cheebyekias will resort to leeching off parents or sell “financial services” or start a small biz (of course, with parents’ funding). imo, they are better off gone as when they pass their prime they will be both a debt and money drain burden to all including their newly formed families. a decade or two from now, they will be beating up their spouses, abusing kids and maids, having atb mistresses or bangla bf’s, cheating others with scams and frauds, and whacking each other at kopitiams over the affection of beer aunties and or jiuhukia toy boys.

How ironic! @ exactly 5.41:41sec, the car burst into flames!
5 people in the car. The car no. 1414.
