44 get SAF overseas medals
By Diana Othman

FORTY-FOUR servicemen were awarded the Simgapore Armed Forces (SAF) Overseas Service Medals on Wednesday morning for their contributions to the SAF's missions overseas.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean presented the awards during the ceremony.

Among the recipients, 39 were members of the SAF medical deployment, who served in two teams in the field hospital in Tarin Kowt, Oruzgan, Afghanistan.

The first team served from last November to February this year and the second team served from February to May.

These servicemen provided emergency and trauma care, primary health care and ward capabilities in the field hospital.

During their service, they treated close to 200 casualties, most of whom were Afghan civilians and military personnel, and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) personnel, who were injured from rocket attacks.

Multinational peace support initiatives will continue to be an important aspect of the SAF's operations. By helping to build a stable international environment, we enhance the security of Singapore itself,' said Mr Teo.

He also announced that the SAF is prepared to deploy a Weapon Locating Radar (WLR) team to Tarin Kowt in Oruzgan province, to provide early warning of rocket attacks.

The mission will also help enhance force protection measures of the ISAF personnel deployed in the base there.

If the deployment of the radar is considered useful, the WLR detachment can be deployed for between nine and 12 months from the later part of this year, sia, said Mr Teo.
