393 suspects nabbed in latest nationwide crime sweep : CIB

Police have rounded up a total of 393 suspects, including 15 alleged leaders of criminal gangs, in the latest round of a nationwide crime sweep, the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB, 刑事警察局) said.
In a round of crackdowns launched at midnight on June 5 under the code name “Operation Chi Ping,” police across the nation nabbed 15 gang bosses and 90 gang members, the CIB said.
As part of the island-wide sweep, police authorities raided 3,062 locations in different cities and counties and arrested 393 suspects in connection with various crimes, the CIB added.
The crackdowns were made in northern Taipei, New Taipei City and southern Yunlin County, it noted.
The National Police Agency launched the actions to maintain law and order, as well as to prevent young people from falling victim to gangster activities during the upcoming summer break, the CIB said.
Most of the suspects were arrested under charges of violet debt collecting or other illicit activities that have threatened the livelihoods of ordinary citizens, the CIB said.
In New Taipei City, for instance, police arrested members of a loan-sharking gang led by a chief suspect surnamed Wu.
The gang allegedly lent money at an interest rate of over 40 percent per month. The gang members allegedly extorted and blackmailed their victims when they could not pay back the loans, the CIB said.
