A holiday to the United States turned tragic for a Singaporean family of four after three of them were killed and another injured in a traffic accident last Friday.

The family had been travelling north towards the Grand Canyon in a silver Hyundai when their car crossed the painted median and collided head-on with a green Dodge van. The car then crashed into a third vehicle while the van went into a ravine, Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) spokesman Kameron Lee told The Straits Times last night.

"The driver of the Hyundai and two passengers were pronounced deceased on scene. One additional passenger of the Hyundai was transported to Flagstaff Medical Centre," said Mr Lee.

It was reported by the Today news site that the Singaporean survivor is Ms Justlyn Yeo Jing Hui, a first-year student at the Nanyang Technological University.

The driver of the van, who is from Spain, also died at the scene. Earlier news reports suggested that the family had been travelling in the van. Five people, including four Spanish passengers in the minivan, were injured in total, said Mr Lee.

When contacted, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs declined comment, citing respect for Ms Yeo's privacy.

Ms Yeo, who is from the university's Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, was reported to be in stable condition.

A 70km stretch of the highway was closed for seven hours to allow for investigations after the accident, which occurred at about 2.21pm local time (5.21am last Saturday in Singapore), said Mr Lee.

as have i said many times, sinkies are deadly when they drive and overtake on any 2-way roads with yellow lines. they not only kill themselves but others. i've been on that stretch of state route 64 twice. the route narrows to single lane each way separated by double yellow lines. at some points along the route double yellow gives way to dashed yellow lines, and those are sections where faster vehicles can try to overtake with safe distance in mind (usually driver can see half a mile ahead). there are sections where one yellow line is dashed and another is solid. if dash is on your side, you can attempt overtaking when road ahead is clear. if solid, must wait or follow the vehicle in front.

A Hyundai passenger vehicle and a minivan were involved in the crash. The three people who died were in the van, the DPS said. Another eight people were injured.

The entire highway was blocked as of 4:30 p.m., according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The southbound lanes were expected to reopen soon, DPS spokesman Bart Graves said, but the northbound lanes could remain closed for some time.

For an alternate route to and from Grand Canyon National Park, drivers can use U.S. 180 between Flagstaff and SR 64 at Valle.

And when they are faced with an emergency situation, their instinctive reaction is to steer left, right smack into traffic! That's why many of these accidents tend to be head on.

impatience and inexperience, plus the usual fatigue on long drives which leads to drivers dozing off behind the wheel. i’ve driven on one of the longest rural drives in the sierras in and out of yosemite, and it’s one of the most treacherous drives for anybody. countless americans have died on that route, including a carload of secret service agents ahead of an entourage for the british queen. the car collided head-on with a county sheriff vehicle.

foggy, icy and wet weather will also contribute to accidents. at the time of this az accident, it was early afternoon, sun was up, fog was gone if any at all, no snow, no ice, no rain out west for almost a month. it’s most likely either driver’s first overtaking attempt or sleepiness. sinkie driver at least made it to az-64 south of u.s.-180, thus he had driven quite some miles on wider 2-lane each way freeways and highways before meeting his demise on this narrow stretch. i highly recommend sinkie tourists who have seldom or never driven on u.s. roadways not to drive on long tours in rural areas. go on a driven or guided tour or rely on a local friend who has driven long drives before, such as through the rocky mountains and great plains. for those drives, i only overtake on narrow highways when the stretch is a straightaway with clear line of sight for at least 0.69 miles (avoid overtaking entire back to back convoys of 3 or more vehicles unless you drive a porsche), and snack on something to fight the sleepiness. beef jerky is a good slow chew for long drives. but since i’m 69% vegetarian i stick my chin with a toothpick to keep awake, or just drive to a pit stop and take a power nap.

you can never learn how to overtake on the internet. you must learn it yourself from years of safe driving. for example, this wiki on how to overtake safely with the 8-step rule is flawed. the reason it's flawed is because there's a bend barely 69 yards away. what if a vehicle zooms by the bend at the last second while driver attempts to overtake and go back into lane between steps 6 and 7 at step 6.9? if you cannot see what's behind the bend, don't try it.

   1 Ask yourself if it is really necessary to overtake. Can you wait for the next safe passing place?
   
   2 Check the oncoming lane. Look ahead - Are there any vehicles in the oncoming lane? Once your complete your overtaking manoeuvre, will there be 100 metres (110 yards/330 feet) of clear road ahead? Is there a no overtaking line ahead? Is there an intersection, pedestrian crossing or railway crossing ahead? If the answer to any question is no, don't overtake.
   
   3 Check your mirrors and blind spot. Is there a car already overtaking you?
   
   4 Change down a gear. You will need the extra power to accelerate your car so you can overtake the vehicle in front.
   
   5 Signal for three seconds. This gives enough time for the cars behind you to get the message. Keep your turn signal going throughout the manoeuvre.
   
   6 Pull out and accelerate. Keep to the speed limit as you overtake the vehicles.
   
   7 Once you are past the other vehicle, check your mirrors and blind spot. Stay in the oncoming lane until you can see the vehicle that you overtook in your wing mirror.
   
   8 Signal back into the correct lane. Pull back into the lane, and deactivate your turn signal.
