A group of lion dancers was performing for Chinese New Year when the floor beneath them suddenly collapsed.

Three of the performers fell into the one-metre-deep sinkhole and were rescued by their teammates.

None of the performers sustained any injuries.

Shocked the crowd

The incident occurred in a shop corridor in Tamparuli, Malaysia at around 11am on Feb. 5.

Rayner Ebi, 45, told New Straits Times that the incident shocked the crowd watching the performance.

The resident, who is also an officer at the Tuaran Member of Parliament's service centre, said that safety concerns regarding the shop corridor floor had already been reported to the Tuaran District Council before the incident.

The incident is a clear reminder of the importance of immediate maintenance of basic infrastructure in the town by the local authorities, he noted.

Rayner said that immediate action should be taken by local authorities, including the Tuaran District Council, to ensure the safety of pedestrians.

Pedestrians in the town should also be cautious when passing through the affected area.
