Jobs S'poreans want

Mar 29, 2010

MORE than 150,000 applications were received for the 5,000 jobs on offer at the three-day JobsDB Career Expo 2010 just over the weekend.

DBS Bank and Qatar Airways proved popular, as the banking and tourism sector received more than 30,000 applications (about 20 per cent of the total).

Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) attracted 10 per cent of total applicants, with 2,000 jobs offered predominantly in food and beverage, facilities maintenance as well as technical roles.

DBS Bank, a first-timer at the fair, had 500 jobs available for positions in consumer banking sales and service, technology and operations, institutional banking, and private banking.

Over 60,000 jobseekers attended the fair, where 500 companies were represented this year compared to about 200 companies in 2009.

Despite the positive response, RazorTV found that Singaporeans can still be very selective when it comes to career choice.

What factors determine whether or not a person will take a job, and what sort of jobs will some never consider no matter how badly they need the money?

Also, are Singaporeans threatened by the growing number of foreigners working here?

Find out on RazorTV.

Whoa! 200k people jobless?

How come the unemployment figure was 2%?

They MASSAGE the figure, stats are taken every quater; eg Jan-April, May-Aug...you are temp working, Sept 1 you are jobless until december 31...in MOM stats are are employed...

that is why you get only 2%...

DBS first time in job fair...they kidding?....how many did they sack in recent years???:p

200,000 applicants doesn't mean they are all unemployed. Of course many are, but many are also looking for better jobs more suited to their skills.

But f course the prospect of competing with the cheaper FTs is daunting.

If we want to voice displeasure at the govt for their policies, protests are welcome at the Istana or Parliament House, OR a better option is to let your votes do the talking. Also make sure all your friends, families, contacts, colleagues, relatives vote likewise too. Make sure at least a couple of Ministers are booted out. This is the ONLY way the PAP will listen.

Noted your point on those who went for the fair...the competing with cheaper FT's is not a new thing, it started in the 1980's or so after the recession caused in part by a Finance Minister at that time. Many companies recruited Malaysians ( FT's), even offering some paid housing & other incentives like if they stay on the same company for five years, they sponsor their application for PR.

At that time, SINkinporeans had their salaries frozen & other benefits too, to help the nation get back on its feet. How do you think the workers feel about this???, they were helpness...no voices!!!

I would note even want to mention the useless labour unions during those times, but just make a point to note.

Protesting outside where ever is not something we can do, unless there is a mass protests of a large quantity of people of same mind, determination & direction and unity in numbers is strength. Other than that, it is 'Don Q fighting the windmill'.

Getting friends & family members to make choices already had been done for a few elections back already, but some do not have the opportunity to register their discontentment & am not ashamed to say, family and so forth were once staunch PAP supporters.

We have to make wise choices, we need genuine voices that have the heart and soul for the common man, not some clowns, parrots, that sing songs & make a song & dance about what they do, with utter arrongance thrown in.

It is time the common man make the choices, not for their own well being but for the well being of their future generations.

There are many SINgaporeans out there, out of work, many have faded into the 'woodwork', many have stopped being counted. Many had been edjed out of jobs once that were meant for the locals fom a large number of foreigners.

The job fairs is not a fair indicator of the many SINgaporeans that are not having a permanent income & a long term careers, many do not have even enough money to start a small business; and if they do there are so mny stiffling laws & again competion from foreigners.

The common man must have a voice, and be able to go for jobs that are available to them....

SINGAPOREANS FIRST!
