2 Sub-committees of PAP New Media Committee

In 2006, the PAP formed 2 subcommittees to counter its online critics. Both the subcommittees came under the PAP New Media Committee chaired by one of 2 potential PM candidates - Ng Eng Hen. One sub-committee handled the first trust by countering anti-PAP rhetoric using pseudonyms in well known and popular sites using 20 IT-savvy party activists. This has since ceased.

The second sub-committee looked at long term strategies. One initiative facilitated the purchase of Singapore's best known forum by a GLC to allow "properly informed and accountable views to take place". Nearly 2 years later, it began a second initiative which has been proven to be a runaway success. This initiative was to address a number of needs one of which was to build a pressure release valve.

So room for speculation..

which forum has been bought/ targeted?

Who qualifies as "singapore's best known forum"?

The first committee you mention is true, but the second part about pressure release valve -- is it just speculation on your part?

Assuming you are correct, I would say the jury is still out as to whether it has been a roaring success. Remember in cyberspace things get amplified. Just when you think something has gained lots of traction, you frequently find later that the groundswell isn't all that great.

Temasek review is an interesting case IMO. It is clearly being funded. But by who? And it is run by someone who clearly has emotional and psychological issues, not to mention a huge integrity problem. Who would fund such a person? And why has it gathered so much steam in such a short time, so as to challenge the first "pressure release valve"? Is it intended to be this way?

Many questions indeed...........

Singapore best known forum?

i would think fuckwarezone?

for around $7.1M in 2006.
http://tomato75.blogspot.com/2006/09/sph-bought-over-hwz-for-s71-million.html

there's more specialised forums catering for different purposes.. like for property, stocks, etc. but none had more impact that hwz then.

Yr last word is 'then'. So is not now?

After being bought, it must have tanked? Cannot imagine SPH in anything online and still a roaring success being the PAPPY's dog.

You got the first part right - its indeed the Hardware Zone. Its now lanquishing and they don't know what to do. At that time there were no other local broadbased forums having political related threads. SPH stomper is doing much better.

I got to say that your political approach of your question is indeed sharp. Nobody expected the form it took and the success it has become. The first sub-committee was the designated pinch hitter and supposedly the more militant in approach, thus the team of 20 anonymous cyber warriors. The first team was headed by Lui who eventually became a cabinet minister and now heading the Ministry in charge of the media.

The second team was headed by 2 P65 chaps, one a fashionista, Baey and Joshesphine Teo. 2 relative lightweights. The approach was based on the fact and belief that the Internet cannot be controlled as people will use servers from overseas. Old Man mentions this very fact in his interview with Nat Geo. Thus the pressure release valve. Let them have their say but in a patch that has some level of control. The first was to purchasea popularforum Hardware Zone and this was meant to control the young but not the very bright. The second was to seed the creation of a second roundtable kind of online news blog to complement the purchased forum. This would attract the intellectuals and wannabe intellectuals who would like to contribute articles without breaching their beliefs. This approach is similar to the now defunct Roundtable.

Roundtable was seeded by 3 chaps associated with the establishment, one was son of a former ISD chief and the other was the brother of the ISD chief. The approach wa also the same - a release valve as University lecturers were getting into the political space, such as Bilveer and Mutalib had to be warned off. It was also a time when expat lecturers were tacitly enouraging dissent which led to the democracy wall being set up at Kent Ridge and which was subsequently removed by the authorities. Roundtable successfully drew in alternative view and the jingle was "non-partisan" It was accepted by public in general. Even till today, nobody has a clue the links to the establishment behind the Roundtable because the state press covers only what they are told to write.

There were other influences as well that led to the creation of the Roundtable. GCT was PM wanted to be accommodating and there was need to handle the GCT and LHL factions. It also turned out to be an excellent platform for identifying those who missed out in the 1st round of selections (thought very much secondary and an afterthought). By the way, these are party matters and such things are never communicated to the civil service. So naturally, ROS dragged it feet and also was a thorn to the Roundtable by being strict on membership and issuing of permits for discussion at venues. Naturally adding to the air of authencity. Till today founders like Harish Pillay have no clue. To be fair the Roundtable went on to contribute significantly to the quality of debate on public policies especially from the human aspect angle, I however did note that they avoided the use of economic data as this tends to corner the govt. Everytime economic data is concerned, the govt will come out swinging. Its hard to tell Singaporeans and the rest of the world that 2 + 2 is not 4. But words carry different meaning and thus interpreted to once convenience.

And its not Temasek Review/WayangParty which I will explain why later. This particular forum has successfully attracted intellectuals. Here is a clue, its server is in the US to add to the air of authenticity. Unfortunately, the calibre is not even close to Roundtable in terms of quality and content, partly due to nature of the setup and the quality of people running it.

Believe me its so successful that all opposition identites, parties are engaged with it with varying degree. Members of various hues are going out and having coffee and tea that its now a rainbow coaltion of sorts.Previously well known critics of the establishment even in SBFforum are now more subdued, prefering to provide "constructive criticisms" not because they have become suddenly afraid of the govt. The preference to engage in discussions with their forum with fellow intellectuals is more appealing. It more so that the forum is made up of real people who have become acquaintences and friends. One tends to tone down and take a middle path and this blunts the thrust of any argument. Are you going to tell your friends that your wife makes the worst laksa - unlikely.

The basis of human interaction is meeting one's personal needs as well as recognition. The need to be wanted and recognised is a powerful draw. Find a suitable platform and its honey to bees. Nobody wants to operate or exist in a vacumn not matter how strong their beliefs. We are gregarious by nature.

As I said nobody expected its success. Now everyone is so chummy they beginning to use same venues and same formats for their own activities. There is also another significant factor and that is facebook that I will cover later.

A political experiment that ended up with social and emotional features. Nevertheless politically expedient.

Facebook has helped changed the local political landscape unexpectedly as well. Will talk about it latter. Twitter as well.

Indeed, one of your lengthiest post !

I first came to very much notice both TOC & The Wayang party (now Temasek Review) during the unfolding May 2009's AWARE saga.

Twitteriing made an impactas the new star media during the AWARE AGM reporting. Even ST staff use Twitter.

TOC looks like a bona fide outfit.

But Wayang Party & later 'Temasek Review' (What a fucking pretentious name !), always seems to be nameless, faceless etc

Then the infamous Kelvin teo poach & proclaimed DDOS attack ....

So, is Temasek Review part of your aforementioned 2nd prong strategy ?

Now I remember TR boasting they are recruiting & has $... very fishy leh

Nothing to do with TR its TOC. You are right about twitter and the impact. Smiliar thing took place in the Philippines and Malaysia using the SMS.

A very detailed post from you. And thanks for clarifying subsequently you were referring to TOC.

It is still not clear to me why concentrating dissent at one particular location would be of benefit to the establishment. It creates networking opportunities. Also gives a veneer of respectability to dissenting voices as a whole.

You seem to suggest TOC encourages people to tone down rhetoric by setting an example themselves. That may be true. But strong rhetoric while finding resonance in opposition circles has not found resonance in the masses yet.

TOC has mass appeal because it has taken a non-rhetorical routes and avoided addressing the hard topics like conflicts of interest within the government machinery as well as the co-opting of non-partisan agencies to serve the ruling party's objectives.

But having mass appeal also means it will become harder to contain and control over time.

My personal opinion is TOC more credible than Wayang Party (Hate the abuse of the Temasak name, one Ho Ching bad enuf).

Better read, better grammar etc

TR likes to sensationalize & calim one-up over TOC.

So, if the Pols are behind TOC, then who is funding TR ?

Bear in mind that this is not a clandestine operations run by local intelligence boys involving cloak and dagger. All political parties when in power attempt to create political institutions and political devices that are partisan or aligned to their needs.

This is one initiative that has borne fruit, much better than expected. Its raison d'etre is to provide a communication platform for dissenting views with responsible accounting and standards and compete with the many of the blogs that began to have an impact. There were no intention to muzzle dissent. Thus the pressure release valve that was argued and accepted. They seeded this by roping in 2 chaps that were firmly within the establishment, a third was previously associated with it. The idea certainly met a growing demand. These chaps by past conduct are very responsible with lots of drive and intiative. One or two were certainly clueless of the setup and the background.

Remy Choo however had not been honest and upfront even with his colleague Andrew leaving him to be caught out when the first murmurs occurred. http://forums.delphiforums.com/sammyboymod/messages?msg=166027.1. You can see how Andrew ended being stranded when SDP made the revelation. What was "completely false" had more legs than a centrepede. The original seed was actually a scholar, an ex-civil servant, a nice guy when approached turned it down because he preferred the Roundtable Format which makes sense for people of that calibre. The Party however wanted a newsblog and they already had popular forum "Hardware Zone" in safe hands and that covered the forum angle.

And as you know people do have short memories and after 5 mths, it all died down.

ps. will continue in another posts.

Yes, you are right. The Vets here know the origin of TR very well. TR is a renegade and sole operator. He started life as Aviator Lim in the old SBF and had a falling out with WP. Then began a series of harrassment of WP and its candidates particulary GMS and even Locke. He even sabotaged a WP dinner by getting some Malay boys to distribute flyers and then calling the press and giving a phone interview. PAP was the least of his concerns. He even created a personal webpage on me. Because he has defamed so many people that he cannot come out in the open and identify himself. All business and contacts are done by email.

Just before TOC came on aboard he began a more professional website. Much of the content is plagiarized. However credit goes to him for the professional outlook and the ability to rush out topical articles quickly.

This guy is a loose cannon and he can shoot anywhere at anytime. The best part is that he has fooled so many people including our well know Ng E-Jay, and even Kelvin of Kent Ridge Common. None of them have met him.

An unusal character that is determined to grab attention.

Sheesh, giving me the shivers to be in the company of all kinds of cyber quacks & pseudo iintellectuals (me too :-( )

Wonder why sane cogent guys like yourself are here. We must all be marginalized intellectuals.

The really successful ones must be out there making money, no time to post here while we 'keyboard warriors' type away....

Pardon the occasional venting....
