SINGAPORE — Two maintenance staff were killed on Tuesday morning (March 22) following an accident on the tracks near the Pasir Ris station, says SMRT.
In a statement, the transport operator said the accident took place around 11.10am "along the track at a servicing point near the Pasir Ris station". No further details were given.
Rescuers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force were called in, and they confirmed the deaths of the two maintenance staff, the statement added.
"We convey our deepest condolences to their families and will be providing support to them at this very difficult time," said Mr Patrick Nathan, SMRT's vice-president for Corporate Information and Communications.
"We are working with the Police to conduct a detailed investigation into this accident."
The Pasir Ris station has been closed since late morning, eyewitnesses said. A small fleet of ambulances, police cars and rescue vehicles from the Singapore Civil Defence Force are at the scene.
SMRT's latest update on Twitter says train service at the Pasir Ris station is expected to resume around 12.45pm. SMRT first tweeted about the incident at 11.20am, saying that there was no train service between the Tanah Merah and Pasir Ris stations in both directions "due to an incident on the track".
