The photos were a statement enough, showcasing dish racks overflowing with messy plates, cutlery, trays, glasses, and food scraps.
SINGAPORE: In response to a post sharing the “sad” and unkempt state of a hawker centre, Singaporeans have shared their exasperation about the issue online. While a few saw it as a lack of oversight, calling for a change in the rules and for attention to be given to hygiene, others pointed out that it is too much work for cleaners.
An online user took to an online group that tracks complaints all over Singapore on Friday evening (March 10). Sharing an album of photos of an extremely messy Albery Food Centre, the post read, “Sad situation! First world country with third world Hawker Centre and people.”
The photos were a statement enough, showcasing dish racks overflowing with messy plates, cutlery, trays, glasses, and food scraps. In response to the post, many Singaporeans shared their thoughts on the matter.
Some called on the authorities to pay attention to this issue. “Policy fail…worse than developing countries,” one said. Another wrote “Make it viral. These days, it’s the only time the government does anything.”
“Where is our NEA staff?” another questioned.
Others brought up the work of cleaners. “It is the problem of contract cleaners and stall holders’ closing time,” wrote one netizen. “NEA must look into the T&C of the cleaning company. Also during peak hours from 12-2pm, more cleaners should be deployed to clean the tables after trays have been returned.”
On the other hand, other netizens saw a different side to the problem. “Nowadays, it’s not as easy to get staff for work,” wrote one.

Hawker centres should increase price until poor Sinkies cannot afford to eat there. These Sinkies are ruining the ambience for our beloved foreigners.

That’s what you get when you group everything together. You don’t get this problem in Bangkok or Taipei where street food is prevalent. The stall owner takes care of the dishes. If he cannot wash or clear them in time his business is impacted. Not others. Now everyone is impacted because of the stack of uncleared dishes.

Thats how it should be. Hawker clean own plates, glasses and cutlerries.

No worries, PAP gov will lazily raise GST to 10% so that can collect more money to wayang the people with new tray return conveyor system. But first thing first, must tear down the old hawker centre and build a new one.

Malaysian MP give Malaysian grade ideas lor. Score points and throw to civil service to implement. :FU:

Don't blame the people, blame the nincompoop technocrats who created the situation.

Cleaners are too expensive to hire? No, it's those bloodsuckers collecting rent from the hawker centres who are the main culprits. Focus on the real enemy, do not get sidetracked. :whistling:

Idiot minister fit to stay home and cook only. Pay her million dollars still remains an idiot.

Just let the sheep suffer as they voted for this-they deserve it for voting for the PAP.

Check whether the tray return policy is causing the vendors to cut the staff to increase their profits.. if yes then the vendors should be fined heavily. This has to be addressed by the NEA to see if there is any source of profiteering result in the service decline..

Can't believe that with all the increase in the progressive wage models and yet we are facing shortage of cleaning staff which is just unbelievable. Hopefully this can be brought up to Parliament to be addressed.

The source of the problem cannot also be its solution.

It's just an NEA and AVA joint project to outsource plate and cutlery cleaning to pigeons
