brilliant! this encourages enlightened and qualified talents who wish to serve the public yet resist joining the pap or one of those fly-by-night alternative parties perpetually in triangular love affair and/or family feud mode.

This is no doubt a valid observation. But PAP can plant proxies with pro-estab figs who may beat other Opp candidates hands down. These proxies are wolves in sheep's clothing too.

However, still, this may come as a blessing in disguise. For these proxies may sing the PAP tune for starters, but when Old Man kicks the bucket, they may feel it's fair game and become turncoats. Which will be good for the anti-PAP cause.

A lot of people are in PAP high posts because they may really believe giving back is their obligation, or they want to get further ahead, or just to impress Old man to be helicoptered higher, get perks etc. Those who are self-serving may jump ship when Old Man dies and his son also steps down and no more of the family wants to rule the roost. Then it's everyone for himself, the PAP disntegrates at the highest level. What follows will first be chaotic and then some coalition for collective leadership emerges. Possible scenario. Probable ? 35/65.

You are right. No voting rights. NCMP have a mandate of sorts, NMP have none.

NCMP are specially designed for oppositions. It make the peasants "satisfied" seeing that oppositions don't have to win elections to enter parliament and provide checks on PAP.
With NCMP seats increased to 9. The Opposition candidates mentality would change, they would target 40% votes to be among the best losers and be a NCMP not 50.1% votes to win. In a proportional representational scheme, those nationwide MPs have equal voting rights, NCMP don't. That's PAP way of telling us, NCMP are not "real" lawmakers

absolutely agree about NMP scheme.

NCMP fought elections and lost, at least they tried to win the peasants votes. NMP have no desire to enter elections and are looking for a backdoor to parliament.

Do NCMP and NMP have the same voting rights?

Scrap off the NMP and NCMP 18 seats.. no invitation please.

Make the opposition members fight the election and enter through front door.

Individuals like NMP should make to join the political parties (PAP or Opp) and be elected in too

Most opposition members were already trying to enter through the front door. You can't get NCMP without that in the first place.

There has been alot of pressure on LHL to open up the channels of communication. Your poitn about the second force resonates. This is effectively to open up without giving up the instruments to make political changes (no voting rights). There is also a need platform to find effective leaders who can perform in the public space. Another roundtable is not in sight. As forummer eatshitndie has pointed out, its society's needs being attempted to be filled but in this case in a sneaky manner. It also avoids ambushes smiliar to AMP which was unexpected.

In the past, political luminaries with battle scares used to sell the political agenda and direction to a group of potential leaders at the old Pyramid house. The present lot has no scars, no stripes and no selling power. PAP itself in not attractive enough.

Frankly, I don't think they even considered the calibre of the current opposition, its level of unity or where its heading.

Dear Scroo

I will put up another reason for the Gov latest political moves and frankly it plays on the weakest link in the Opposition. The lack of Inter Party Opposition Unity and the lack of Intra Opposition party loyalty.

Frankly with second and 3rd prizes up for grabs I do wonder whether the discipline to avoid three cornered fights will still be there.

Secondly with this action the PAP has acknowledged that there will be an opposition force in some form in the political Singapore of the next 20 years. The question is whether it will be united and be able to form a force do challenge the PAP for power or will be fragment always in opposition to the PAP but never being able to challenge it seriously

In that regards the SDP splitting up after winning the most seats and disintegrating under new leadership stands as a clear example, and the tendency of opposition characters to move ard in search of newer roots and easier political advancement also comes to mind. Wong Hong Toy for once has shifted loyalties within the Opposition candidate at my last count three times and Ling as well. The Second and Third Prize will bring all these pressures to the forefront

I agree on the NCMP part especially on the point of some better than none. We had bite with Steve Chia and Sylvia. Chiam is spent ( understandbly) while Low is probably waiting for the mountains to fall in line.

some better than none.
at least those NMP and NCMP,some of them do make good contribution.

All oppositions should come together and reject the NCMP scheme. Fight to get into parleement by the front door.

Your supportee, the SDP, is guaranteed to take any NCMP seat available to them. So before you ask for that, you might want to think twice.

After reading this link http://www.sammyboy.com/showthread.php?t=86951, I simply threw my hands up in despair. We have fools amongst most opposition parties. I am not sure whether they really do have different idealogues, or they aspire to enter parliament as opportunists. With the number of opposition parties that will contest in the coming GE against the PAP, voters will be confuse and may decide to spoil their votes or vote for PAP.

If they are unable to get together at a maximum of 2 opposition parties, I will be giving up at any chance of winning some seats. There are just too many Indian chiefs and at this point they cannot even agree on working together to represent US THE VOTERS? Are our opinions not important? They want our votes, yet they are telling us NOT TO VOTE THEN IN. If they are of the opinion that the PAP are arrogant and are deaf to our complaints, can they do better?

I am utterly sick of what is happening and I am sure many voters are of the same mind. My warning to the opposition, DO NOT TAKE US FOR GRANTED. WE ARE NOT FOOLS TO VOTE FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT REMAIN UNITED EVEN AS A SMALL GROUP. I WILL BE ASHAMED TO VOTE FOR SUCH PEOPLE.

PAP offered only 9 NCMP seats and this attracts people setting up a lot of new political parties to become oppositions. Most opp members believe this GE provide them a good chance of entering Parliament through backdoor but that is not important.

NCMP do get media exposure & a chance to speak & perform in Parliament plus receiving a tiny monthly allowance. So this is better than loithering in coffeeshop or hawker centre.

NCMP is good scheme. Thanks PAP

Well... in 2001 Steve China won NCMP seat with 35% valid votes.

Of course Chee cannot contest now. But it is possible for SDP members to win one NCMP seat. Let us not forget what happen in 1991

How can you compare Steve Chia with the likes of the SDP led by the MONGREL who bit his masters' hands LOUDHAILER chee soon juan?

Nine seats - let's see:

Chiam See Tong
Low Thia Khiang

Left 7

Sylvia Lim
Steve Chia
Kenneth Jeyaratnam
Sin Kek Tong
Sebastian Teo
Perry Tong
Gerald Giam
Tony Tan
Justin Ong
Cheo Chai Chen
Poh Lee Guan
Lina Chiam
Yip Yew Weng
Christopher Neo
Ken Sun

Any one of those will beat the SDP hands down. Maybe if James Gomez and Eugene's son did not campaign under the SDP banner they may stand a chance. Under the SDP, zilch.
