17 motorists arrested for drink-driving

SINGAPORE -The traffic police arrested 17 motorists for drink-driving in an island-wide operation conducted in the early morning of April 28, 2014.
A total of 54 drivers were stopped and tested for alcohol consumption at various road blocks set up across Singapore. 17 of them - 13 men and 4 women aged between 22 and 53 - failed the test and were arrested for drink-driving.
The highest Breath Evidential Analyser (BEA) test result obtained from the drivers was 61 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, which is almost double the prescribed legal limit.
Convicted drink-drivers will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months. They will also lose their driving licences and need to retake and pass the theory and practical driving tests in order to obtain their driving licences again.
In addition, first-time offenders will be fined between $1,000 and $5,000 and disqualified from driving for a period of 12 to 48 months, depending on their BEA test results.
Repeat offenders will face a maximum fine of $30,000 and a jail term of up to three years. If death or serious injury was caused, they may also be caned up to six strokes.
