SINGAPORE MasterCard holders spent almost 25 per cent more this year during the two-month annual sale even as inflation climbed to a 26-year high and the city- state's economic growth slowed to its weakest since 2003.
The cardholders spent almost US$453 million (S$637 million) from May 23 to July 20, with dining taking the top spot, MasterCard Inc. said in an e-mailed statement to Bloomberg on Monday.
The study was done among customers of MasterCard's credit cards in the city-state, the company said.
'According to our latest MasterCard Worldwide Index of Retail, Singaporeans are among the most optimistic consumers in the Asia-Pacific region, with a bright outlook on the economy, employment and regular income over the second half of this year,' T.V. Seshadri, vice-president and senior country manager of MasterCard in Singapore, said in the statement.
Singapore's retail sales slowed in May as consumers bought fewer cars and spent less on furniture amid the fastest inflation since 1982, according to the latest data from the government.
That prompted Jannie Tay, president of the Singapore Retailers Association, to say in a July 15 interview that the government should consider a cut in the city-state's goods and services tax to improve consumer spending and ease inflation. Tourists spent more than US$248.4 million, 11 per cent more than a year earlier, with Australians replacing Americans as the top spenders, said MasterCard, based on spending by its cardholders.

Only food businesses will survive in the second half when population increases further and mass retrenchment begins.

Many are tightening their belts.
Go take a walk in the malls & you'll find closures.

s'porean spend 25% more means inflation is about 25% lah.

inflation => prices go up => to buy the same things, you must spend 25% more.

25% may or may not be the actual inflation %, but at least some part of the 25% is caused by inflation.

what a dumb news article.

Got a call from a friend in S'pore who went to Suntec City too, amazed at the number of people buying tours from the frequent travel fairs there.

Singaporeans must be rich, poor people don't sign up to go on tours in hordes week after week. Retails shops fold mainly because of an over optimistic rental bid leading to high rental costs, not because of poor sales or S'porean customers lacking money

I don't know what world you're living in, but singaporeans are definitely well-to-do and living it up. Even on weekdays the malls and food courts of central shopping centres are overflowing. Of course there'll be people left out of this boom - all developed countries have their poor and destitute. What's stopping you from joining the hordes of rich, successful singaporeans and talented foreigners??

A more rounded report, would be statistics on whether.

a. There was an increase in the number of credit card holders
not paying off in full each month.
b. Was there an increase in the roll over balance growth, Q/Q Y/Y.
