For the first time in 2 decades, voters will get to watch representatives from the ruling People¡¯s Action Party (PAP) and up to 6 Opposition Parties discuss the ¡°short and long term challenges¡± facing Singapore in two television forums planned and organised by Channel NewsAsia (CNA).
Channel NewsAsia was reported to have sent invitations to the respective parties on 22nd March for the forum which will be telecast on 2nd April on CNA (in English) and on 3rd April on Channel 8 (in Mandarin), respectively.
Apart from elected representatives of the People¡¯s Action Party (PAP), CNA has also invited Hougang MP Low Thia Khiang from the Workers¡¯ Party, Potong Pasir MP Chiam See Tong from the Singapore People¡¯s Party (SPP), to both the English and Mandarin forums.
The Reform Party (RP) and National Solidarity Party (NSP), which took part in CNA¡¯s Talking Point programme last month, have been invited this time for the Mandarin forum to air on Channel 8. The Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) and Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) have been invited to the English forum.
Ms Lee Siew Hoon, an Executive Editor at CNA said that each of the hour-long forum will adopt a structured format with timings allotted to allow for a moderated discussion and for all parties to state their position.
CNA has also stipulated just one condition to all seven political parties: If they are not represented at the television forums by an incumbent MP, then their representative must be a member of the party¡¯s central executive committee (CEC) and ¡°must be eligible to stand for the coming election¡±.
Of the Opposition Parties invited to the forum, 4 of them, namely: WP, SDA, RP and NSP have confirmed their attendance and named their representatives.
Meanwhile, the SPP has taken issue with the lone condition stipulated by CNA which effectively ban its Secretary-General Dr Chee Soon Juan and Chairman Gandhi Ambalam from taking part in the forum.
Party chairman Gandhi Ambalam was fined for speaking in public without a permit and Secretary-General Chee Soon Juan, an undischarged bankrupt, are not eligible to contest the coming General Election.
