A 10-YEAR-OLD clad in his pyjamas was found dead at the foot of his block of flats in Bukit Panjang early one morning in August, a coroner's court heard on Wednesday.
A bolster was found next to Boon Yong Quan, a Primary 5 student, and the left side of his blue rubber slipper was found about 2m away at about 4am on Aug 4. The right side of the slipper was found at the staircase landing between the eighth and ninth floor of the block.
After a house-to-house check, police managed to trace the boy's family on the ninth floor. At a coroner's inquiry into the boy's death, Staff Sergeant Low Kay Wee from Jurong police division said police found the main gate of the unit padlocked but the wooden door was not secured.
Earlier on Aug 3, the boy, the younger child, was watching television when he told his father that he was tired and went to sleep. The rest of the family stayed up to watch television until 11pm.
The boy's father told police that Yong Quan, who was good in math and science, did not pose any major disciplinary problems at school or at home. Neither did he have any health problem such as sleep-walk.
He was a helpful, well-behaved, responsible and a good-natured student who did well in his studies, the court was told.
In returning an open verdict, State Coroner Victor Yeo said it was unclear why the boy had left the flat early that morning at about 3.20am. 'As such, I am not able to come to any firm conclusions as to the circumstances surrounding his fall,' he said. None of his family members was in court.
