[Sing Tao Daily News] The Highways Department said today (9th) that the air purification system of the Central and Wan Chai Bypass and Eastern Corridor Link Road (hereinafter referred to as "bypass") in the Eastern Ventilation Building was partially damaged by the fan assembly used for ventilation. The air purification system has been suspended. The Department is actively following up the incident and expects that the rehabilitation work will be completed by the end of April to resume normal operation of the air purification system. There are a total of three air purification systems in the bypass, distributed in three ventilation buildings (ie, the East Ventilation Building, the Central Ventilation Building and the West Ventilation Building), which are used to purify the bypass tunnel to discharge air through the ventilation building. The detoured engineering consultancy advised the Highways Department on March 5 this year. During the performance test of the air purification system at the end of February, the contractor found that some of the fan screws and blades of the air purification system located in the East Ventilation Building were damaged and loose. The situation of taking off. For safety reasons, the air purification system of the East Ventilation Building has been closed since the end of February. After the Highways Department was informed of the incident, it has notified the relevant departments to conduct an investigation to find out the cause of the accident and arrange for the repair of the defective parts as soon as possible so that the air purification system can resume normal operation. After inspection, it was confirmed that 7 of the 15 fans in the Dongfeng Building had different degrees of damage, including screw damage and damaged blade edges.
The Highways Department initially suspected that during the adjustment of the fan blades, the contractor had problems with the screw assembly process and some of the screws were loosened. The loose screws also caused some of the blade edges to be damaged. The contractor has ordered the relevant fan accessories from overseas to arrive in Hong Kong, and plans to complete the restoration work at the end of April to restore the operation of the air purification system of the East Ventilation Building. Samples of damaged screws and fan blades have been sent to local material laboratories and overseas fan manufacturers for testing and analysis. As the air purification system of the East Ventilation Building is currently suspended, in addition to the air monitoring in the bypass, the Highways Department has also requested the consultants to conduct air monitoring on the bypass east tunnel entrance and nearby areas. According to the air monitoring data, there was no abnormality in the air quality in the vicinity of the bypass tunnel and the east tunnel entrance. The remaining 2 sets of air purification systems installed in the Central Ventilation Building and the West Ventilation Building, as well as the ventilation system and exhaust system in the bypass, have been operating normally. Therefore, the air quality in the bypass is not affected. The Highways Department said that it had submitted a report to the Environmental Protection Department yesterday (8th) and would fully cooperate with the EPA's investigation. At the same time, the Highways Department will continue to closely monitor the progress of the rehabilitation work and thoroughly investigate the causes of the incident and pursue related liability issues.
