Tottenham boss Pochettino rejects Europa League excuse

458957_heroa.jpg

The Argentine feels his team were perfectly prepared to beat West Brom but blamed a "very slow" tempo and start to the game as a factor in their shock 1-0 defeat

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has denied the suggestion that the exertions of Europa League football were a factor in their surprise 1-0 home defeat to West Brom.

The Argentine watched as his team laboured at White Hart Lane before James Morrison headed the Baggies in front, securing Alan Irvine's first Premier League win since taking over at the Midlands side.

And although Pochettino made 10 changes from the 0-0 draw with Partizan on Thursday, Tottenham looked slow and off-the-pace as they fell to a second consecutive home defeat.

Pochettino said: "It’s [Europa League] not the excuse, we change [sic] 10 players from Thursday but this is not an excuse, we’re in good condition to play and to have a good performance.

"Sometimes in football we are in the wrong condition to play and make more mistakes. My feeling now; we are uncomfortable on the pitch. The players seemed uncomfortable."

West Brom had a number of chances via Craig Dawson, Saido Berahino and Craig Gardner, who all took advantage of some ponderous defending from the hosts.

And Pochettino lamented his side's poor start, adding: "The beginning of the game was wrong, [we] moved the ball slow[ly], [at a] slow tempo. In football we need to play quick[ly].

"West Brom played deeper, we played slowly from the beginning.

"Angry? Yes. I’m very disappointed. [It was a] very bad day... The team showed nervousness in the game. The draw is fair when you analyse the game but in the end we make [sic] a mistake and lose.

"We need to show more because in the Premier League every game is difficult. West Brom arrived at White Hart Lane with only two points and bottom but we need to show more.

"We were wrong in our way [of playing, were] very slow from the back, [showed a] lack of movement. We were wrong. You need to show you’re the best team, you have to play with risk."

Tottenham host Nottingham Forest on Wednesday in the League Cup before heading to the Emirates for the first north London derby of the season on Sunday.

Injured Benteke nearing Aston Villa return

The striker has been ruled out with a torn Achilles since April, but manager Paul Lambert believes he will be ready for first-team action soon after taking part in training

Christian Benteke is close to making his return to action for Aston Villa after tearing his Achilles tendon back in April.

The strike scored 19 goals in 34 appearances for the club during his debut season but missed the end of his second campaign and the World Cup after injuring himself in training.

But manager Paul Lambert is looking to introduce Benteke back to the fold in the near future after the striker returned to training last week.

When quizzed on a potential return for the striker at Chelsea on Saturday, the Scot said: "I'm not sure if that one might be a bit early.

"But you're looking not too far after that I think. He has trained this past week with no ill effects. He will train again this week. We will see how he is. But he's not too far now."

Villa have coped well in Benteke's absence this season, taking 10 points from five games, though they were beaten 3-0 at home by Arsenal on Saturday.

Wenger confirms Debuchy out for three months after surgery

The new signing damaged ligaments in his left ankle during the recent 2-2 draw with Manchester City and now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines

Mathieu Debuchy is set for three months on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on his left ankle, Arsenal have confirmed.

Goal exclusively revealed last week that the summer signing is set for an extended period on the sidelines after damaging ligaments in his ankle during the recent 2-2 draw with Manchester City.

"He has had surgery and will be out for three months," Wenger told the club's official website. "A reasonable delay is three months.

"It all went well, but it can be a week or two earlier or a week or two later, but it will be around three months.

"It is a blow of course, how big it will be we will only know afterwards because it will be down to how well we replace him. We bought [Calum] Chambers for that."

Hector Bellerin deputised in the 2-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund three days later before Chambers overcame a doubt of tonsillitis to play the full 90 minutes in Saturday's 3-0 win over Aston Villa.

Diego Costa: I didn't say anything bad about Atletico Madrid

The Spain international was upset by reports he made comments about his former side following his transfer to west London

Diego Costa has denied claims he apologised to Chelsea fans for his part in their Champions League defeat to his Atletico Madrid side last season.

The Brazil-born striker reportedly expressed his regret at converting a penalty during los Colchoneros’ 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge last season which eliminated the Blues from the competition.

However, the 25-year-old has now insisted that these were not his words and he would not have made disparaging remarks about the team with which he won La Liga

“It is impossible that something against Atleti comes out of my mouth,” Costa told Tiempo de Juego.

“How am I going to speak ill of a team that have given me everything? I’ll be careful and just say things when they have to be given.”

Costa, who scored a record seven goals in his first four Premier League appearances but could not find the net in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City, added he is aiming for more silverware this term.

“I knew I could not always score, but I work to score. I am getting better physically,” he said.

“We hope to get a title and individually I try to continue well.”

Van Gaal & Woodward to thrash out Manchester United's January transfer plans

458950_heroa.jpg

Sep 22, 2014 16:22:00

The Dutch manager wants to spend up to €64 million on new defenders this winter, but the club's executive vice-chairman is wary about the impact on the club's next accounts

By Paul Clennam

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is set to meet Ed Woodward this week as the club step up their January transfer plans, Goal has learned.

Van Gaal, who is hoping to spend up to €64 million this winter, has long considered Kevin Strootman his No.1 target and is also keen to bolster his defence following a shaky start to the season.

Following the second biggest summer transfer spend in history, such an outlay would take the club past the €254m barrier for the 2014-15 season.

The Dutchman has become well aware of the task on his hands at Old Trafford following a poor start to the season which has garnered just one win from five Premier League matches, including the humbling 5-3 defeat at Leicester City on Sunday.

And as he displayed in the summer, the former Bayern Munich coach is willing to let players go to fund new arrivals.

The position of Rafael, who signed for the club alongside twin brother Fabio in 2007 and made his debut a year later, is under threat and he could be shown the door as Van Gaal continues to build a squad in his image.

The Brazilian enjoyed his best season at Old Trafford in the 2012-13 campaign, Sir Alex Ferguson's last as manager, but struggled for form and fitness under David Moyes and he could face the same fate as Danny Welbeck, Tom Cleverley, Javier Hernandez, Nani and Shinji Kagawa.

Chris Smalling, who is behind Phil Jones and Jonny Evans in the pecking order at centre-back, finds himself in the same boat and could also be moved on.

However, Woodward, the club's executive vice-chairman, has already told investors that big spending is not on the cards in January and is aware of the impact that another big outlay could have on next year's accounts.

United recently announced a record annual revenue of €550m to June 30, 2014, an increase of 19 per cent, and also revealed profits of €30m.

Those figures, though, do not include five of the club's six summer acquisitions, with the signings of Angel Di Maria, Luke Shaw, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Radamel Falcao's loan deal to be declared in next year's results.

But Woodward is also aware of the impact of a second year without Champions League football on the club's existing sponsorship deals, as well as its forecasted financial results for next year, and will discuss the viability of further deals with Van Gaal.

Although Van Gaal fully appreciates the need for new central defenders, he remains keen on Strootman, the Netherlands and Roma midfielder, and United are confident they could reach a deal either in January or the summer.

The club have made his representatives aware that he would earn €127,000 per week at Old Trafford, should he recover sufficiently from a serious knee injury, although Roma have repeatedly stated their desire to keep him in the Italian capital.

Strootman was pivotal to Van Gaal's Dutch squad and his injury signalled a change in formation for the country's World Cup campaign. The manager believes the 24-year-old can play an equally important role in his United team as he looks to strike the right balance in his ranks following the signings of some of the world's top attacking talents.

The Red Devils, having bought only Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw before the start of the Premier League season, kicked off the campaign with defeat to Swansea City at Old Trafford before drawing at Sunderland and Burnley.

Van Gaal picked up his first win as United boss in impressive style against QPR on September 14, with Di Maria, Marcos Rojo and Blind impressing on their Old Trafford debuts, but saw his side capitulate following the award of a soft penalty at the King Power Stadium on Sunday.

Pochettino: Tottenham need a change of mentality

457911_heroa.jpg

Sep 23, 2014 19:14:00

The Spurs boss wants his side to "move the ball quicker" in light of their dismal 1-0 loss at home to West Brom and insists that his squad rotation policy was not to blame

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino believes that his side need a change of mentality ahead of their League Cup tie with Nottingham Forest.

Wednesday's third-round tie represents Spurs' third match in seven days, after a trip to Partizan in the Europa League last week and a home Premier League encounter with West Brom on Sunday.

A 0-0 draw in Belgrade was followed up by a surprise 1-0 reverse to Alan Irvine's side and Pochettino says that his players have to start adapting to rigours of playing in Europe.

"We need to be more prepared and more ready because the Premier League is strong and the Europa League is strong," he told reporters.

"We need to change the mentality and make sure we are ready every time. You go to the stadium and you have to be able to compete and be strong because every game is different.

"We need to move the ball quicker, faster. West Brom played long balls and tried to win the second ball. We had a problem because we were always late to the second ball - we took a lot of time to get into the opposition's box. We need to be more aggressive in the last third of the pitch."

Pochettino made 10 changes for the Europa League fixture and, with a north London derby at Arsenal to come on Saturday, the Argentine is likely to rotate his squad again at White Hart Lane on Wednesday.

"Our best starting team depends on each and every game - there is no doubt about that," he added.

"It's not an excuse. A bad performance on Sunday is not because of the changes. We have a very strong squad and we need to use our players.

"We have a lot of games ahead and after each match we analyse every player. At the moment the players are not in a position to play three games in one week."

Liverpool get green light for Anfield expansion

417235_heroa.jpg

Sep 23, 2014 17:14:00

The club are keen to extend the Anfield Road stand by a further 4,800 seats as they look to increase their ground's capacity by 8,500 in time for the 2016-17 season

Liverpool have been granted planning permission by Liverpool City Council to start the expansion of Anfield.

The Premier League club have been given the green light for a redevelopment which will see 8,500 seats added to their stadium's Main Stand, taking the overall capacity to around 54,000.

Outline proposals to increase the capacity of the Anfield Road stand by around 4,800 were also given the go-ahead by the City Council's Planning Committee on Tuesday, subject to conditions and legal agreement.

The club revealed that work on the Main Stand is due to start early next year and is expected to be completed in time for the beginning of the 2016-17 season if all goes to plan, with games still to be played at Anfield in the meantime.

Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre said: "Today's approval by the Planning Committee is another step on our journey which we embarked on nearly two years ago.

"We received very positive support for our proposals during a public consultation exercise earlier this year and whilst we are delighted about the progress made today, there are still some steps that we need to navigate through in order to give us the certainty that we need to proceed with our expansion plans."

Joe Anderson, the mayor of Liverpool, said: "This is a very important milestone in our ambitions to transform the Anfield area, bringing new jobs, investment and housing.

"The overall regeneration will see £260 million (€331m) invested in Anfield. Liverpool Football Club's proposals for the stadium are a key part of this. The club is a major employer in the area and its stadium is a major draw for tourists and visitors."

The scheme will also include a carefully designed area which will be the new home for the Hillsborough Memorial.

Wenger: Mertesacker and Gibbs will be fit for Tottenham clash

455361_heroa.jpg

By Alex Fisher
Sep 24, 2014 11:30:00

The pair missed Tuesday's League Cup defeat to Southampton with minor problems but their manager is confident both will be available for Saturday's North London derby

Arsene Wenger said he expects Per Mertesacker and Kieran Gibbs to return for Arsenal in Saturday's north London derby clash with Tottenham, despite missing Tuesday's League Cup defeat to Southampton.

Minor problems saw Mertesacker and Gibbs miss the cup clash with Saints, forcing Wenger to name an inexperienced defence that included 19-year-olds Hector Bellerin and Isaac Hayden.

Nacho Monreal's continued absence meant Calum Chambers was the only regular starter named by the Frenchman but the youngster had only made seven previous appearances since joining from Southampton.

Arsenal's young side were beaten 2-1 by Ronald Koeman's men but Wenger said he is confident his experienced duo of Mertesacker and Gibbs will be fit to face Spurs on Saturday.

"They will be alright," Wenger said of the defensive duo. "We are a bit short, yes, because of the injuries we have. Gibbs had a little hamstring problem and we could not play him.

"Mertesacker is a bit on the edge, and then we have no choice."

Wenger's options in defence were further reduced on Monday when France international Mathieu Debuchy was ruled out for three months following surgery on his left ankle.

Rooney: Don't write off Manchester United

Sep 24, 2014 09:11:00

The Red Devils are languishing in 12th in the Premier League after Sunday's shock 5-3 defeat to Leicester City but the 28-year-old insists they will improve

Wayne Rooney is adamant that Manchester United will enjoy a successful season despite their disappointing start.

United's Premier League campaign plummed new depths on Sunday when they surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 5-3 against newly-promoted Leicester City.

It left Louis van Gaal's men languishing in 12th position with just one win from their first five matches, despite having enjoyed a relatively reasonable run of fixtures on paper.

However, captain Rooney took to Facebook to fire back at United's critics on Tuesday, believing there is enough quality to enjoy a change in fortunes.

"There seems to be a lot of people who have written us off because of Sunday's result but I don't see it that way," Rooney wrote on his page.

"When I look around our dressing room and see the quality we have and the manager's unbelievable attention to detail I have no doubts this team will be successful."

United welcome West Ham at Old Trafford on Saturday as they bid to get their Premier League campaign back on track.

Ronaldo dismisses United rumours

24 September 2014

662651header.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo poured cold water on a possible return to Manchester United, claiming his future is with Real Madrid.

Ronaldo has openly spoken about his desire to return to Old Trafford in the future, but talk of a move back to Manchester has intensified in recent weeks after Real parted ways with Angel di Maria and Xabi Alonso.

While Real have replaced the pair with Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez, former president Ramon Calderon said the Portugal captain had become disillusioned in Madrid.

Former United defender Gary Neville also talked up Ronaldo's potential return, claiming it is a possibility, with Manchester showcasing their financial strength in the transfer market.

However, Ronaldo distanced himself from those rumours after scoring four goals against Elche on Tuesday.

"It's nothing important, what's important is Madrid. On a personal level, things are going well and I want to help this shirt," Ronaldo said post-game.

"I don't see a need to talk about things outside the club.

"It's all speculation, speaking about my future … My future is Madrid. I'm happy.

"The season is going well and I'm not talking about my future, it doesn't make sense."

'Come home Ronaldo' - Manchester United fans to fly flag during Real Madrid game

456150_heroa.jpg

By Russell Greaves
Sep 24, 2014 17:49:00

The 29-year-old has been linked with a return to Old Trafford in recent weeks, with one supporter group to step up their campaign with a banner against Villarreal

A banner urging Cristiano Ronaldo to return "home" to Manchester United will be flown over El Madrigal when Real Madrid play Villarreal.

The Portugal forward has been linked with a move back to Old Trafford and one United fans' group is doing its bit to make it happen with a banner which will read: 'Come home Ronaldo - United Reel'.

United Reel, which describes itself as an organisation for "die hard Manchester United fans from every corner of the globe", has raised the funds ahead of Real's La Liga match at Villarreal on Saturday.

"United Reel has active supporters on every continent of the world and we are all united by our love for Cristiano both as a footballer and as a person," the statement read.

"We stand united in our views and we won't step until we bring Ronaldo home."

Rumours of Ronaldo's unrest at Santiago Bernabeu intensified when ex-Real president Ramon Calderon claimed that the 29-year-old was disillusioned with life at the club and unhappy with Florentino Perez.

However, Ronaldo spoke out after Tuesday's 5-1 win over Elche - in which he scored four goals - to dismiss any rumours that he was looking for a transfer away from the European champions.

"It's all speculation, speaking about my future … my future is Madrid. I'm happy," he said in quotes reported by AS.

"The season is going well and I'm not talking about my future, it doesn't make sense."

West Ham 'unlikely' to share Olympic Stadium with Tottenham

459966_heroa.jpg

Sep 24, 2014 00:56:00

Hammers' vice-chairman Karren Brady says the club would probably decline a ground-share proposal despite Spurs needing a home during their temporary move from White Hart Lane

West Ham appear unlikely to agree to share the Olympic Stadium with London neighbours Tottenham when they move to their new home in 2016, according to Hammers vice-chairman Karren Brady.

United are set to move away from Upton Park after holding off a lengthy legal challenge from both Tottenham and Leyton Orient.

Spurs, meanwhile, have plans to build a new ground close to their current White Hart Lane home, although their preparations suffered a blow earlier this month.

The club announced it was unlikely that the arena would be ready for the 2017-18 season as originally intended, because of a High Court challenge to their plans.

With Tottenham potentially homeless during the intervening period, it was put to West Ham vice-chairman Brady at a media conference on Tuesday that another club could share the Olympic Stadium.

Brady did not mention Tottenham specifically, but with Orient's legal challenge having come to an end, her response looked to be one directed at Spurs.

"In reality they probably could [share]," she said. "But only with our permission, and no-one has asked us for permission.

"And even if they had, we would probably say 'no', depending on who it is - if you catch my drift.

"We are the anchor tenant for the winter matches and nothing else can happen in that time without our permission and our football matches take priority over everything else.

"If there are events at the stadium we have approved we do not see any of the revenue from that."

QPR must stop feeling homesick, says boss Redknapp

LONDON (Reuters) - Queens Park Rangers must adapt to life on the road in the Premier League, but high-flying Southampton are likely to be another uninviting host on Saturday, says QPR manager Harry Redknapp.

Eighteenth-placed Rangers have struggled on their travels so far this season, and were beaten 4-0 by Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in their first two away games.

Former Southampton boss Redknapp, who expects a hostile reception at St Mary's after steering the club to relegation in 2005, knows QPR must improve their away form if they are to climb the table.

"We've had two tough away games. We haven't had enough of the ball -- that needs to change this weekend," Redknapp told a news conference on Thursday.

"We've played well at home to be honest. We've got to take that away from home now this weekend, but it will be tough.

"I always get a little bit of grief at Southampton -- let's hope we can go there and get a win."

QPR come up against a new-look Southampton side that have flourished during the early stages of the season, and sit second in the table after claiming 10 points from their first five matches.

Despite losing a raft of influential players over the close season, new Saints boss Ronald Koeman has calmed the tides on the south coast and Redknapp praised the Dutchman for the way he has adjusted to life in the Premier League.

"I've been surprised by just how well Southampton have done, but they deserve every credit," Redknapp said.

"(Ronald) Koeman has made an amazing start. They've got a conveyor belt of talent down there and they've bought well this summer, replacing a lot of very good players.

"Ronald will know it's a long season though. He knows they haven't achieved anything yet. But they just look a very, very good team at the moment. They play with great confidence.

QPR will be without midfielders Joey Barton and Jordon Mutch for the trip to St Mary's, while Sandro, Niko Kranjcar and Adel Taarabt are also carrying injuries.

"We've got a couple of knocks," Redknapp said. "We'll have a look at them in training today and tomorrow. Joey and Jordon are both definitely out. Sandro looks like he might be okay though.

"Niko got a knock on Saturday and Adel is still struggling."

Rodgers dismisses Sterling-Real Madrid links

458526_heroa.jpg

By Liam Twomey
Sep 25, 2014 16:25:00

The 19-year-old has attracted admirers across Europe over the past 18 months but his manager insists he has no concerns about potentially losing his starlet

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has cooled rumours linking Raheem Sterling with a move to Real Madrid.

Sterling has enjoyed a meteoric rise to prominence over the past 18 months and is now a key figure for Liverpool and England after a series of impressive displays.

Recent reports suggest Carlo Ancelotti has placed the 19-year-old top of his wanted list as Madrid look to continue their policy of acquiring the most exciting attacking talent in European football.

Rodgers admits Sterling's recent form makes speculation inevitable but insists he is not worried by talk of a transfer.

"You could link Raheem with every club in the world at the moment," Rodgers told reporters. "I sit easy with it."

Sterling played 120 minutes as Liverpool were forced into the longest penalty shootout in League Cup history on Tuesday, but Rodgers insists he has no concerns about including him in Saturday's Merseyside derby clash with Everton.

"Raheem is a super fit boy," he added. "Playing 120 minutes in midweek won't be a problem for him."

Liverpool have endured a difficult start to the season as they continue to adjust to life without Luis Suarez and Rodgers admits it will take time for his team to regain its attacking rhythm.

"When you lose a core of players it becomes a bit broken," he continued. "That's how our game has been."

Liverpool could avoid UEFA sanctions

Liverpool are expected to turn a near-£50million loss reported in 2013 into a profit last season.

454149354.jpg

Friday 26th September 2014

If the club are confident of announcing such figures, they could avoid any sanctions from UEFA for financial fair play (FFP) rule breaches.

UEFA has announced that Liverpool are one of seven clubs who did not play in European competition last season who are under investigation for potential FFP breaches.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said the club were "comfortable" with UEFA's action and it is understood the 2013-14 figures will show a profit when they are formally announced in the spring. That is a significant turnaround given that Liverpool made a loss of £49.8million for the 2012-13 season, and £40.5million for the 10-month period before that.

UEFA's FFP rules dictate that losses must be restricted to £35.4million over a two-year window so ending the 2013-14 season in the black - thanks to a combination of the bumper new Premier League TV deal, commercial income increases and cost-cutting - will be a huge boost to efforts to avoid sanctions.

The Merseyside club will also aim to write off a big chunk of losses as allowable stadium expenditure - the 2011-12 accounts reported that £49.6million was associated with Liverpool's stadium costs, £35million coming from former co-owner Tom Hick's aborted plan to build a new stadium on Stanley Park which current owners Fenway Sports Group had to scrap.

UEFA announced that Liverpool, Monaco, Roma, Besiktas, Inter Milan, Krasnodar and Sporting Lisbon are all being subjected to investigations relating to "potential break-even breaches'.

Rodgers said: "It's obviously something that will be dealt with by the directors. It's something we're comfortable with because we're great advocates of financial fair play. It's ongoing with the club."

UEFA will not withhold any Champions League or Europa League money from those clubs, but prize money has been held back from five clubs - Bursaspor, CFR Cluj, Astra Giurgiu, Buducnost Podgorica and Ekranas - as a result of "over-due payables" - non-payments to other clubs, players and/or tax authortities.

A UEFA statement read: "The CFCB (club financial control body) has opened formal investigations into seven clubs as they disclosed a break-even deficit on the basis of their financial reporting periods ending in 2012 and 2013.

''These clubs will need to submit additional monitoring information during October and November upon the deadlines set by the CFCB, subsequent to which an additional communication shall be made and conservatory measures may be imposed.''

Manchester City and Paris St Germain were the clubs hit hardest by UEFA last season for breaching FFP rules - they were each fined £49million and handed restrictions on transfer spending and a reduction in Champions League squad size.

UEFA said the impact of FFP was showing positive results.

The statement continued: "The introduction of the UEFA club licensing and financial fair play regulations has already had a very positive impact on the scale of overdue payables, as they have decreased from 57 million euros in June 2011 to eight million euros in June 2014.

"In addition, aggregate losses reported by Europe's first-division clubs in the 2013 financial year have gone down to 800million euros from a record-reported deficit of 1.7 billion euros in 2011."

Return of Chamakh for Palace against Leicester

Marouane Chamakh is back in contention as Crystal Palace return their attentions to the Barclays Premier League against Leicester on Saturday.

Marouane%20Chamakh%20of%20Crystal%20Palace.jpg

Friday 26th September 2014

A Palace side showing a full 11 changes following the win at Everton lost 3-2 after extra-time to Newcastle on Wednesday night to exit the Capital One Cup at Selhurst Park.

Chamakh missed the defeat and the 3-2 win at Goodison Park with a hamstring injury and may be selected among the substitutes against the Foxes, with manager Neil Warnock insisting the players which began at Everton would likely return to start.

"Chamakh will be available," Warnock said. "He was very close to being available last weekend but we felt it was not worth the risk.

"There won't be many changes from Everton. At Everton we were fantastic, so I don't envisage many changes.

"But it's nice to look at the squad, the second group of players, knowing what you can bring into the squad.

"That was the pleasing thing last night, the way we played, we enjoyed it, we went forward whenever we could, we looked like we wanted to go out and play football in the cup.

"They all played really well against a strong Newcastle team. It showed we've got quite a good squad."

Warnock was less than happy with the stadium announcement, made while the match with Newcastle was ongoing, that Manchester City would be the opponents in the fourth round.

"I made an enquiry after the game, because I was disappointed, if I'm honest," Warnock added.

"I don't think it should have been announced. I don't know why it was announced and who announced it. I'm sure there will be some enquiries today.

"I felt it was out of order for both sets of fans, who just wanted to get on with the game."

Asked if knowing City, 7-0 winners over Sheffield Wednesday, would be their next opponents with victory had affected his players, Warnock's response was sarcastic.

Warnock, with a smile, said: "I think that's why they threw the last goal in, so they didn't go to Man City away. We heard the score."

Leicester beat City's Manchester rivals Manchester United 5-3 last weekend and are seventh in the table with two wins and one loss in their five matches since promotion from the Championship.

"They've made the Premier League look quite easy, really," Warnock added.

"I'm hoping they get a more difficult game on Saturday."

No comparing Suarez and Balotelli - Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers is refusing to make comparisons between former Liverpool man Luis Suarez and new arrival Mario Balotelli.

After moving to Anfield in January 2011, Suarez established himself as one of the best players in the world with a prolific spell over the past couple of years.

The Uruguayan netted 23 Premier League strikes during 2012-13, before equalling the record for goals in a 38-game season in 2013-14 when he found the net 31 times in just 33 appearances.

That form prompted Barcelona to tempt him away from Anfield in a big-money move during the off-season, while Rodgers brought in Balotelli from Milan in an attempt to replace Suarez's goals.

The Italy international has one in five appearances in all competitions so far, and Rodgers believes likening the duo is a futile exercise.

"There is no comparison between the two as players," he said. "Luis was brilliant for me in his time here and developed to become a player who consistently delivered in terms of scoring and creating.

"Mario is different. He's got a lot of experience for 24, he has come here as an established international.

"Suarez elevated himself, that was clear. He wasn't world class when he came in but when he left to go to Barcelona he had put himself in that bracket.

"He did that because of his consistency in scoring goals and keeping his performance level high.

"World class is about being at the highest level consistently, being at that level in your game consistently. That's what takes you there.

"I think Mario is potentially world class. You can't compare Suarez and him, but Mario is coming in as an international striker and he's a talent, no doubt."

Trio out of Hull City trip - Pellegrini

26 September 2014

Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed Manchester City will be without Stevan Jovetic, Fernando and Samir Nasri at Hull City on Saturday.

Jovetic is continuing his recovery from a hamstring injury suffered in the 1-0 defeat to Stoke City last month, while Fernando has been troubled by a groin problem and also did not feature against Chelsea last weekend.

Nasri, an unused substitute for the 1-1 draw with Jose Mourinho's men, has a groin issue of his own, but Sergio Aguero and David Silva are both fit despite picking up respective knee and ankle knocks.

"Jovetic and Fernando are out," Pellegrini told a news conference on Friday. "They will be ready next week.

"Nasri also has a groin problem, [but] Aguero and Silva are okay."

Pellergini is expecting a tough test against Steve Bruce's side, but hopes to see a repeat of the performance that saw City triumph 2-0 in last season's corresponding fixture, despite the early dismissal of Vincent Kompany.

"Hull is a difficult team to play away," he added. "Last season, we played really well and we won.

"I hope it will be the same."

Van Gaal calls up McNair and Thorpe

26 September 2014

Louis van Gaal has called Paddy McNair and Tom Thorpe into his squad for Manchester United's clash with West Ham on Saturday.

United boss Van Gaal has seen his defensive options severely limited by Tyler Blackett's suspension and injuries to Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans.

Reserve-team captain Thorpe, 21, or 19-year-old McNair could therefore partner Marcos Rojo, who is likely to move inside from left-back, against Sam Allardyce's men.

Van Gaal confirmed the inclusion of the inexperienced duo before going on to explain why the versatile Daley Blind, a left-footer like Rojo, will not be utilised in the heart of the defence.

"They [McNair and Thorpe] are in the squad," Van Gaal told MUTV. "That is always why we have a youth education.

"It was also our policy [to utilise the youth squads] and always the policy of the club too.

"I don't like having too many left-sided defenders or left-footed players in defence.

"I think always of balance so I have to pick up a right-sided central defender from the youth education. Normally, I am always doing things like that. I have already said that we have a lot of vacancies when you buy only six players and let 14 players go.

"The amount of injuries is worrying me and they are not coming back. Smalling is already, for the third time, injured. Evans also. Jones had one injury in the national team, which was unfortunate.

"I am a coach who has a lot of experience and I believe I was never in this situation before so it is surprising me. I am evaluating myself and my staff and also the players and what is wrong.

"But I cannot imagine what we are doing is at another level to [what I did at] my former clubs. So I have already adapted to a certain level that I think we can play during a game but I cannot train at a lower level."
