Inter climbed above Milan on goal difference with their first Serie A win in four on Sunday - a 3-0 victory over Palermo.
Inter defeated Palermo 3-0 on Sunday to register their first victory in four Serie A matches.
Roberto Mancini's men had suffered back-to-back defeats in their last two games – part of a run that saw Inter slip to 13th.
The hosts looked the better side at San Siro on this occasion and went ahead through a Fredy Guarin header in the 16th minute, although they did have to ride their luck at times.
Palermo will wonder how they were unable to pull level in the 50th minute, when a remarkable series of goalscoring opportunities culminated in Paulo Dybala blasting over from two yards out.
Inter struck the woodwork twice at the other end before Mauro Icardi doubled the lead with a low drive in the 65th minute, and the Argentine put the result beyond doubt with a headed effort two minutes from time.
The result sees Inter climb above local rivals Milan on goal difference into ninth.
Guarin came into the Inter starting XI as one of three changes to the side that suffered a 1-0 defeat to Napoli in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals on Wednesday and, after Juan Jesus had tested Stefano Sorrentino with an early header, the Colombia international broke the deadlock.
The former Porto man rose highest from a Xherdan Shaqiri corner to head the ball against the ground and beyond Sorrentino.
Dybala had curled over a free-kick from a dangerous position prior to Guarin's opener, and Palermo's first chance to equalise went begging as Luca Rigoni found the side-netting from an Achraf Lazaar cross.
Yuto Nagatomo was forced from the field after receiving treatment for an apparent thigh injury, with Dodo coming on in his place, and Inter struggled to test Sorrentino after going ahead – Gary Medel's optimistic long-range strike about as close as they came before half-time.
Palermo should have been level five minutes into the second half, but a series of glorious opportunities failed to bear fruit.
Edgar Barreto squared to Dybala when shooting was arguably the better option, before the ball broke to Franco Vazquez on the edge of the penalty area.
The 25-year-old's low drive hit the left-hand upright but bounced across the face of goal to Dybala, who inexplicably blasted over from point-blank range.
Inter hit the woodwork twice at the other end soon after – Icardi sending a clever looping header against the right-hand upright, before Andrea Ranocchia headed against the crossbar.
Mancini's side doubled their advantage in the 65th minute, though, when the ball found Icardi in space inside the Palermo box, and the Argentine converted a low strike.
Both goalscorers combined for Inter's late third - Guarin chipping in a cross from the byline for Icardi to head home and make sure of three points and a position above Milan in the table.

Roma picked up a 2-1 win at Cagliari on Sunday to register their first victory in five Serie A fixtures.
Rudi Garcia had seen his side's title tilt falter in recent weeks, going on a run of four draws on the bounce, but a return to winning ways pulls Roma within seven points of leaders Juventus, who beat Milan 3-1 on Saturday.
Adem Ljajic powered into the roof of the net after some neat build-up play in the 37th minute, before Leandro Paredes doubled the advantage with a driven half-volley five minutes from time.
Paul-Jose M'Poku headed a late consolation for Cagliari but there was not enough time for the hosts to find an equaliser.
Napoli, who have now won four in a row, remain in touch with the top two following their 3-1 win at home to Udinese.
Dries Mertens tucked home the first, before Manolo Gabbiadini raced onto a through-ball to net the second.
Cyril Thereau pulled one back before the end of the first half, but had the ball in his own net on the stroke of the hour thanks to a fluffed attempted clearance from a free-kick.
Napoli remain four points adrift of Roma, while Udinese are 12th.

Filippo Inzaghi failed to secure a win at Juventus to lift the pressure upon him but the Milan coach believes their display was encouraging.
Milan's performance in Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Serie A champions Juventus can be used as a "starting point" to reignite the San Siro club's stuttering season, says Filippo Inzaghi.
Goals from Carlos Tevez and Leonardo Bonucci sandwiched Luca Antonelli's effort on his second Milan debut before Alvaro Morata settled the contest for Juve.
Giampaolo Pazzini was denied by a fine Gianluigi Buffno save with the scores at 2-1, and Inzaghi saw plenty of positives in Milan's game.
He said: "Despite many relevant absentees, I think that the team showed a great attitude today.
"It's pretty clear that playing against a full-strength Juventus side is not easy for anyone, otherwise they wouldn't have won all those games so far.
"But I think that we were always in the game and in fact we also had the chance to make it 2-2 with Pazzini and we could have reopened the game.
"So, despite the defeat I think that this can be a new starting point."
"Obviously we should make fewer mistakes because we conceded goals like sitting ducks.
"But I think that both the second half against Parma and today's game can be new starting points for us while we recover the 14 injured players we've got."

Tevez raced away to score the opener in a 3-1 home win for Juve, with replays suggesting the Argentine had strayed marginally offside.
Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani claimed that Juve manipulated the replays in such a way to show Tevez to be onside, and vowed to bring up the matter with the relevant authorities.
Juve responded to those allegations in a statement on Sunday, rubbishing Galliani's remarks and claiming the Milan CEO was attempting to shift focus away from his side's defeat.
In turn, Milan released a statement of their own, which read: "Arrogance is a Juventus trait and something that they cannot escape from.
"It would be superfluous to respond to anyone like this.
"It is a good thing however that even they agree to open up the discussion and debate over the production of TV graphics which emerged following the episode during Juventus-Milan last night."

Mancini said Icardi's lack of exuberance after each goal was down to a strenuous relationship with the club's fans, as the Argentinean striker and Fredy Guarin saw their shirts thrown back at them in Sassuolo after handing their tops to supporters.
"In my opinion you should celebrate after a goal," the former Manchester City boss told Sky Sport Italia.
"I don't think he's unhappy, I assume it's a leftover from last Sunday. The fans cheered him, so it seems to be sorted out.
"Guarin played well, though at times he gets a bit stubborn with the ball and can lose his way.
"He's perfect as the deeper point of a midfield three, as he plays the ball well and has great power."
Mancini said Inter's performance on Sunday differed little from their losses to Napoli and Sassuolo, the Italian claiming fortune was not in their favour previously.
"Tonight's Inter is the one I wanted," Mancini added.
"It's also the one I saw against Napoli and Sassuolo.
"The only time it wasn't my Inter was against Empoli, as in the other occasions we made costly mistakes.
"We have to keep training, as things are starting to go our way and at times you need a bit of luck too."
The luck that went Inter's way on Sunday was in the form of Palermo's profligacy, as Franco Vazquez hit the woodwork with the visitors trailing 1-0 early in the second half - while Luca Rigoni also missed a gilt-edged chance in the first stanza.
"I don't know how Dodo made that mistake, as he had a team-mate three metres away and wasn't even under pressure," Mancini said, of Inter's defending when Vazquez narrowly failed to equalise.
"This is the kind of error that we paid for in the other games. We cannot keep giving the ball away in these situations."
Diego Perotti scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot as Genoa defeated 10-man Lazio 1-0 in Serie A on Monday.
Lazio missed out on the chance to go fourth in Serie A as they fell to a 1-0 home defeat to Genoa after Diego Perotti converted a penalty following goalkeeper Federico Marchetti's sending off in the first half.
A win would have seen Stefano Pioli's side leapfrog both Sampdoria and Fiorentina in the table, but defeat means they remain sixth.
The key moment in the game arrived shortly before the half-hour mark.
On-loan Milan forward M'Baye Niang sprung the offside trap and raced onto a pass from Andrea Bertolacci, where he was taken out inside the area by Marchetti.

Alvaro Morata says he is proud to play alongside a "true champion" like Carlos Tevez in the wake of Juventus' 3-1 Serie A win over AC Milan on Saturday.
The duo both scored once in the reigning champions' victory at the Juventus Stadium, with Tevez netting the opener and Morata getting his side's third goal to effectively put the match to bed.
The Argentine leads the Serie A goalscoring charts with 14 goals in 21 appearances and Morata has stressed that he's learning a lot from his experienced team-mate.
"Carlos is a point of reference for any striker," Morata was quoted as saying by Tuttosport.
"I am learning so much from him. He is a true champion and a world class attacker.
"He is not only very strong in the technical aspect of the game, but he has great charisma as well and is able to transmit his desire to fight and win to the team."

Sacchi says he has been disappointed by the capital club's efforts this season, insisting they must become more of a team.

"Juventus have been replicating last season's form. Massimiliano Allegri is probably less of a teacher than Antonio Conte, but he has other qualities that allow Juve to keep performing at the same level.
"Unfortunately, Roma have shown that they have certain limitations. They have individual quality but are still too reliant on a player like Totti, who is 38 now.
"It is not all about individual players in football, but about the collective. Their defensive organisation is still a bit rough around the edges.
"Roma - and Napoli for that matter - are not as accustomed to winning as Juventus. This makes a big difference."

Luis Muriel has delivered a veiled dig at Udinese coach Andrea Stramaccioni after praising the philosophies of Sinisa Mihajlovic.
The Colombian striker moved to Sampdoria in January after overcoming concerns over his fitness prior to the completion of the deal.
He has yet to make his Samp debut but already feels at home, giving particular praise to the welcome he has received from his new head coach Mihajlovic.and also president Massimo Ferrero after struggling at Udinese.
"I wanted at all costs to come to Genoa," he told the Gazzetta dello Sport. "If things had fallen through, I used to think it would be the end of me, that I wouldn't make it in Udine.
"Ferrero didn't know me, but he showed me affection right off the bat. And Mihajlovic showed me how much he cared for me from the first meeting.
"After a year-and-a-half in which you're not doing very well, finding a coach who really believes in you is fundamental."
Muriel has struggled to replicate the form he showed in the 2012-13 season when he netted 11 Serie A goals, a dip in form that he blames on the coaching staff.
"They started asking things that they didn't require of me before, like running after everyone," he added.
"That was the role of Alexis Sanchez, who did that well. But I didn't have the same characteristics, so I struggled a lot.
"I was no longer thinking straight, so it was time to find a new scene and start again."
Loyalty is rare in modern day football, but Daniele De Rossi revealed how he has rejected several offers to remain a one-man club with Roma.
Daniele De Rossi admits there have been times when he almost left Roma, but claims his deep love of the club convinced him to stay.
The Italy international is a one-club man and has made over 350 Serie A appearances since making his debut for in January 2003.
De Rossi, who earned his 100th cap for Italy last year, has followed in the footsteps of his father Alberto - who has been involved at Stadio Olimpico for the past 21 years as a player and a coach.
The 31-year-old's talents on the pitch have seen him linked with the likes Real Madrid and Manchester United in the past, but De Rossi stated that he and his father share a bond with the club that would make it difficult to walk away.
"At certain times there was a slight possibility of leaving, but deep down we [De Rossi and his father] share a love for this club and that's what keeps us going," he told UEFA.com.
"In modern-day football it's [his loyalty] an exception, there are a lot of things to consider now."

Former Juventus midfielder Emerson wants Paul Pogba to think carefully should he ever consider leaving the Serie A giants.
Nine years on from his departure from Juventus, former Brazil international Emerson has warned Paul Pogba to carefully consider his decision should he ever think of doing the same.
Emerson went to Real Madrid in 2006 at the height of the Calciopoli scandal and has revealed that perhaps he departed Turin too soon.
Following much speculation about the highly rated Pogba, the France international extended his deal at Juve in October last year, which will keep him at the club until 2019.
That agreement appears to have secured Pogba's future for the time being and Emerson wants the 21-year-old to take time over any decisions that may arise further down the line.
"When I left Juventus to follow [Fabio] Capello to Spain, Juve were in a different situation that the current side," Emerson told Tuttosport.
"Calciopoli had broken and the club needed to raise funds by selling players. I accepted Real Madrid's offer, knowing I was moving to one of the best clubs in the world.
"However, now after some time and being a little bit older I would act differently. I was fine at Juve, I'm sorry I left.
"Pogba? This is just my personal experience, each situation is different and a player has to make a decision based on their feelings at the time.
"Having said that, leaving Turin this summer would be different to 2006. Real Madrid are always one of the world's top teams , but now Juve have returned to their historical level: dominant in Italy and aiming to win in Europe.
"If Pogba stays, alongside the likes of [Carlos] Tevez, [Andrea] Pirlo and [Arturo] Vidal and maybe a big signing, the distance to the superpowers narrows.
"It depends on what Pogba wants, but one thing is for sure, when you change teams you have to start again from the beginning.
"At Juve, Pogba is protected, comfortable and has a near-phenomenon in Pirlo alongside him to help him."
The troubles continue to mount for Serie A's bottom club Parma, who face further sanctions for failing to pay players and staff.
Beleaguered Parma are facing up to the possibility of being docked further points over unpaid wages.
The financially stricken Serie A club were hit with a one-point penalty earlier this season for failing to pay players and staff.
Now, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has confirmed that Parma - who are rock bottom of Serie A - have been deferred to the Disciplinary Commission again having failed to pay wages for July, August and September last year.
Parma's former president Tommaso Ghirardi and director general Pietro Leonardi are also facing punishment from the FIGC.
A Russian-Cypriot consortium bought the club from Ghirardi in December, but they subsequently sold their shares earlier this month with Giampietro Manenti confirmed as president earlier this week.
